1) What is a DWV double tee used for on a drain and vent stack?
The Nibco 835 is a double sanitary-style tee with four solder cups: it lets you keep a continuous run of pipe through the run ends and branch off in two opposite directions from the same fitting. Typical use is back-to-back fixtures on a common drain or vent stack, so two fixtures tie in at the same elevation instead of stacking two separate tees. It is a drain, waste and vent fitting only, not for pressure water lines.
2) What sizes does the Nibco 835 double tee come in, including reducing combinations?
Nine size configurations. Straight sizes are 1-1/4 inch, 1-1/2 inch and 2 inch. Reducing combinations are 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/4 x 1-1/4, 2 x 2 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2, 2 x 2 x 1-1/4 x 1-1/4, 2 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2, 3 x 3 x 2 x 2, and 3 x 3 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2. Note that 3 inch is only offered as a reducing body with 2 inch or 1-1/2 inch branches.
3) Do the ends on the Nibco 835 solder or thread onto the pipe?
All four ends are solder cups, C x C x C x C. They slip over the outside of copper DWV tube and are soldered. There are no threads on this fitting, so if you need a threaded transition you have to run an adapter off one of the cups.
4) Can I use this double tee for back-to-back lavatories on a 2 inch stack?
Yes. The 2 x 2 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 version, MPN E270500, gives you a 2 inch run through the stack with two 1-1/2 inch branch cups facing opposite directions, which is the usual arrangement for two lavatories sharing a wall. If both fixtures are on 1-1/4 inch traps arms instead, take the 2 x 2 x 1-1/4 x 1-1/4 (E270600).
5) Is the Nibco 835 double tee cast bronze or wrought copper?
Cast bronze, ASTM B584 alloy C84400, and dezincification resistant. Material and workmanship conform to ASME B16.23, which is the standard covering cast copper alloy solder-joint DWV fittings. Cast bodies are what you get in the reducing and multi-branch DWV patterns like this one.
6) Can I put a Nibco 835 double tee on a water supply line?
No. This is a DWV fitting, intended for drain, waste and vent only. DWV copper fittings are made for the thinner-wall DWV tube and gravity drainage, not for pressurized supply. For a pressure water branch you need a pressure-rated copper tee, not this pattern.
7) Which 3 inch double tee do I order for a 3 inch stack with 2 inch branches?
MPN E270770, the 3 x 3 x 2 x 2 double tee. If the two branches are 1-1/2 inch instead, order E270850 (3 x 3 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2). There is no straight 3 x 3 x 3 x 3 version in the 835 pattern, so a full-size 3 inch double branch has to be built another way.
8) What is the difference between the 2 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 and the 2 x 2 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 double tee?
The run. On E270650 (2 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2) the run reduces from 2 inch on one end down to 1-1/2 inch on the other, so it is used where the stack steps down above the branches. E270500 (2 x 2 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2) keeps 2 inch straight through the run. Branches are 1-1/2 inch on both.
9) Is this fitting approved for commercial jobs or just residential?
Both. The 835 double tee is listed for commercial and residential plumbing systems, and it carries the ASME B16.23 material and workmanship reference that specifying engineers typically call out on copper DWV. For anything beyond that, Nibco publishes technical data sheets and catalogs with the engineering and installation detail.
