1) What makes a drop-ear tee different from a regular copper solder tee?
The Nibco 711-5 is a drop-ear tee, meaning it has cast mounting ears alongside the three solder cups. Those ears let you nail or screw the fitting directly to a stud, wall backing, or ceiling support so the branch outlet stays put while you make the connection and stays rigid afterward. A plain straight tee has no ears and has to be supported by the pipe itself. Use the drop-ear version where the branch takes a fixed load or needs to hold position, like a stub-out behind a fixture.
2) Is the Nibco 711-5 drop tee approved for drinking water?
No. The 711-5 is cast from a bronze alloy whose use in U.S. potable drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. It is intended for non-potable service: commercial plumbing, fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial, irrigation, and residential plumbing lines that are not carrying drinking water. If you are plumbing a potable water system, you need a lead-free rated fitting instead.
3) What pipe does a C x C x C tee connect to, and do I solder all three ends?
All three openings are solder cups (C x C x C), so the fitting slips over the outside of copper tube and every joint is soldered. There are no threads on any port. The 711-5 is offered in 1/2 inch, which takes 1/2 inch nominal copper tube on the run and the branch, straight size through all three ports.
