Nibco B257200 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does Ftg x C mean on the Nibco 733-2 union?
Ftg x C describes the two ends of the 733-2 union. One end is a fitting end (male, sized to slip into a copper fitting's solder cup), the other is a C end, a solder cup that takes copper tube. Both ends are solder connections, so the joint is sweated, not threaded. That combination lets you drop the union into a run where one side lands in an existing fitting socket instead of on plain tube.
2) What copper tube sizes does the Nibco 733-2 solder union come in?
Three sizes: 1/2 inch (B257000), 3/4 inch (B257100) and 1 inch (B257200). Those cover the common branch and riser sizes in residential and light commercial copper water and hydronic piping.
3) Why put a union in a copper line instead of just soldering a coupling?
A union gives you a disconnect point. The 733-2 is used so the line can be broken for repair or equipment service without cutting the pipe or damaging the run. Sweat a coupling in and the only way back out is a torch and a saw. Put a union at each side of a pump, valve or water heater connection and the component drops out with a wrench on the nut.
4) Is the Nibco 733-2 union brass or bronze, and does it resist dezincification?
Cast bronze, ASTM B584 alloy C84400, and it is dezincification resistant. That matters on closed hydronic loops and irrigation lines where water chemistry attacks the zinc in ordinary yellow brass and leaves a porous, weakened fitting behind.
5) Does the Nibco 733-2 meet ASME B16.18 for cast copper alloy solder fittings?
Yes. Material and workmanship on the 733-2 union are per ASME B16.18, the standard covering cast copper alloy solder joint pressure fittings. That is the reference a spec engineer or inspector will be looking for on a submittal for a solder pressure fitting.
6) What systems is the Nibco 733-2 solder union approved for?
It is listed for commercial plumbing, fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial, irrigation and residential plumbing systems. Note the potable exception, though: drinking water use has been prohibited since January 3, 2014, so the plumbing applications here mean non-potable service.
7) Do I need to take the Nibco 733-2 union apart before soldering it?
Standard practice on a cast solder union is to separate the two halves and sweat each end into the line independently, then bring them together and tighten the nut on the machined seat. Sweating the union assembled risks heat damage to the seat and can leave solder on the sealing face. Nibco publishes its copper fittings installation instructions and technical data sheets for the exact heating and joint procedure.
