A union gives you a joint you can break apart later without cutting pipe or reheating a soldered joint. The 733-4-LF has a nut and two mating seats, so you back off the nut and separate the line to pull a pump, valve, or water heater for service, then reassemble. A coupling is permanent. Put a union on each side of any component you expect to replace.

7) Can I use this copper union on galvanized steel pipe?
Not directly on the solder end, no. On a copper to galvanized transition, use a dielectric union instead. The 733-4-LF is the right choice where the threaded side is brass, bronze, or a valve or appliance port.
8) Do I need thread sealant on the male NPT end of a bronze union?
Yes, the male NPT half needs PTFE tape or a pipe thread sealant rated for the system, same as any tapered thread joint. The union's own seal is the machined seat between the two halves, tightened by the nut, and that seat is metal to metal, so no dope goes there. Sealant only belongs on the NPT threads.
