Nibco B25570L – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Nibco 733-LF union have solder ends on both sides, or is one end threaded?
Both ends are solder cups. The 733-LF is a C x C union, so it sweats onto copper tube on each side. The union nut in the middle is what lets you break the joint later, so there is no threaded pipe end to make up.
2) Why use a union instead of just a coupling on a copper line?
A coupling is permanent once soldered. A union like the 733-LF has a nut and seat in the middle so you can break the line apart later without cutting pipe or torching a joint, which is the point of putting one at a pump, water heater, valve or any piece of equipment you expect to service. Nibco lists this one for repair access on the line without damaging it.
3) What copper pipe sizes does the Nibco 733-LF union come in?
Five sizes: 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2 and 3 inch. Part numbers run B25561L (1-1/4), B25566L (1-1/2), B25570L (2), B25575L (2-1/2) and B25580L (3). Sizes are nominal copper tube, so a 2 inch union takes 2 inch type L or M tube.
4) Can I use the Nibco 733-LF union on hydronic heating and chilled water piping, or is it potable only?
It is not potable-only. Nibco lists the 733-LF for commercial and residential plumbing, heating, HVAC, fire protection, industrial and irrigation systems. Same cast bronze union works across all of them.
5) Will heat from soldering damage the union seat?
The 733-LF is a cast bronze union with a ground metal-to-metal seat, not a gasket, so there is no elastomer to burn out. Good practice is still to back the nut off and sweat each half separately before making up the joint. Nibco publishes copper fitting installation instructions covering torch technique and cleaning.
