Nibco N64N006 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Nibco 74-CL boiler drain on a potable drinking water line?
No. The NIBCO 74-CL boiler drain is prohibited from use in U.S. drinking water applications after January 3, 2014. It's intended for residential plumbing service such as boiler and hydronic draining, not potable supply. If you need a drain on a potable line, specify a lead-free rated hose drain instead.
2) What connections does the Nibco 74-CL boiler drain have - does it solder to copper or thread on?
Both options exist in the 74-CL family. The end connection is solder cup or MIP by hose: in 1/2 inch you can get either a copper solder cup or a 1/2 inch male iron pipe inlet, each terminating in a standard hose thread outlet. The 3/4 inch size is MIP to hose only. So if you're tying into a threaded boiler tapping, take the MIP version; if you're sweating into a copper stub, take the cup.
3) What pressure and temperature can a Nibco 74-CL boiler drain handle?
The 74-CL is rated 125 psi at 100 degrees F, with a maximum temperature of 180 degrees F (82.2 degrees C). That covers typical residential hydronic and domestic hot water draining, but it is not a high-temperature steam valve. The Buna-N seat is the limiting part on temperature.
4) Will the Nibco 74-CL boiler drain corrode on well water or aggressive water?
The valve body is dezincification resistant cast copper alloy, listed as bronze material, which is the specification you want where water chemistry attacks ordinary brass and causes it to fail at the threads. That's the main reason to spec the 74-CL over a plain brass hose drain on a hydronic loop that sees makeup water.
5) Can I hook a garden hose straight to the Nibco 74-CL to drain a boiler?
Yes, the outlet is a hose connection, so a standard garden hose threads right on for draining a boiler or hydronic loop to a floor drain. Serviceable in place too, since the bonnet screws in and the Buna-N seat can be reached without cutting the valve out.
6) Can the 74-CL boiler drain be used as a hose bibb on an outside wall?
It isn't built for that. The 74-CL is a boiler drain for residential plumbing systems, rated to 180 degrees F and prohibited for drinking water use, with no freeze protection or vacuum breaker in its design. For an exterior wall tap you want a frost-free sillcock with an integral backflow preventer.
7) What size do I order and what is the Nibco part number for the 1/2 inch boiler drain?
The 1/2 inch size carries NIBCO part number N64N006. Pipe size is the only thing you select on this drain, so match it to the tapping or copper stub you're connecting to.
