1) Can the Nibco QT74X boiler drain be used on potable drinking water lines?
No. The QT74X quarter-turn boiler drain is prohibited from use in U.S. drinking water applications after January 3, 2014. It is intended for residential plumbing service such as boiler and hydronic drain-down points, not potable supply. If the drain point is on a potable line, you need a lead-free rated drain instead.
2) What are the pressure and temperature limits on the Nibco QT74X boiler drain?
It is rated 125 psi at 100 F, with a maximum temperature of 180 F (82.2 C). That puts it in low-pressure drain service, so it is not a fit for high-temperature steam or anything running above 180 F.
3) How does the Nibco QT74X connect to the pipe, and will it take a garden hose?
Two inlet styles are offered: a solder cup for sweating onto copper tube, or male iron pipe (MIP) threads. The outlet is a hose thread connection, so a standard garden hose or washing machine hose threads straight on. Note the 3/4 inch size is furnished in male threads only, so if you want a solder-cup inlet you are looking at the smaller size.
4) What size is the Nibco QT74X boiler drain, and what is the part number?
It is offered in 1/2 inch pipe size, MPN NB64MH6. Nibco also furnishes the QT74X pattern in 3/4 inch, and in that size it comes with male threads only.
5) What are the internal parts of this boiler drain made of, and will they hold up to hot water?
The body, ball, and stem are brass, with a PTFE seat and a nitrile O-ring. Brass trim and a PTFE seat handle repeated hot-water drain-downs up to the valve's 180 F ceiling, and the quarter-turn ball design seals without a washer to replace like an old compression-style drain.
6) Can I sweat the Nibco QT74X onto copper without wrecking the seals?
The solder-cup version is built for sweating, but the seat is PTFE and the O-ring is nitrile, so keep the flame on the cup and off the body, and open the ball to a mid position while soldering to pull heat away from the seat. If you would rather not risk it, order the MIP thread version and thread it into a copper adapter instead.
