Nibco B350400 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Nibco 750 bulkhead fitting be used on a potable water line?
No. The 750 bulkhead fitting is cast from ASTM B584 alloy C84400 bronze, and use in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. Keep it to non-potable service: fire protection, heating and HVAC loops, industrial and irrigation piping. For potable domestic water you need a lead-free rated fitting instead.
2) How does the Nibco 750 bulkhead fitting connect to copper tube?
Both ends are solder cups, C x C, so the fitting slips over copper tube on each side and is sweated in place with flux and solder. There are no threads on either end. If your line is threaded iron or PEX, you would need an adapter ahead of this fitting.
3) What is a bulkhead fitting used for in a copper piping system?
A bulkhead fitting carries a pipe run through a tank wall, panel, or partition and seals at the penetration, rather than simply joining two lengths of pipe in open air. The Nibco 750 does that job with solder cups on both sides so the copper tube sweats straight in on each face of the bulkhead. If you only need to join two pieces of tube in a run, a plain coupling is the cheaper part.
4) Is the Nibco 750 bulkhead fitting suitable for systems with aggressive water that attacks brass?
It is dezincification resistant, which is the property that matters where water chemistry leaches zinc out of ordinary brass and leaves a weakened, porous body. The alloy is C84400 cast bronze per ASTM B584. That makes it a reasonable pick for closed heating loops, industrial and irrigation lines where dezincification is a concern, but not for potable water.
5) Does the Nibco 750 meet the standard our spec calls out for cast copper alloy solder fittings?
Material and workmanship are per ASME B16.18, the standard for cast copper alloy solder joint pressure fittings, and the casting alloy is ASTM B584 C84400. Manufacturing is in an ISO 9001 certified facility. Those are the three callouts most submittals ask for on a cast solder fitting.
6) Can I use the Nibco 750 bulkhead fitting on a fire protection or HVAC line?
Yes. System uses listed for the 750 include fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial, irrigation, and commercial and residential plumbing (non-potable). It is a solder pressure fitting, so it belongs in pressure piping, not drainage.
7) What do I need on hand to install a Nibco 750 bulkhead fitting?
Standard sweat-joint materials: cleaned and deburred copper tube, flux, solder, and a torch. The fitting ships as the bronze body with solder cups only, so any gaskets, nuts, or sealing hardware your bulkhead penetration calls for are separate. Nibco publishes copper fittings installation instructions covering joint prep and heating.
