The cross features solder cups. This fitting provides a means for a connection to be made in continuous pipe line and branch out in two different directions. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. In addition to its inherent qualities of beauty, durability and low maintenance, copper's reusability makes it an ideal application in sustainable projects. NIBCO® copper fittings are manufactured in an ISO 9001 certified facility, and backed by a 50-year limited warranty. Nibco B271100 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Nibco 735 cross on a potable water line?
No. The 735 cast bronze cross is prohibited for use in U.S. drinking water applications after January 3, 2014. It's a cast bronze fitting made to ASTM B584 Alloy C84400, which is not a lead-free potable alloy. Use it on non-potable service: commercial plumbing, fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial, and irrigation. For potable copper lines, order a lead-free wrought copper cross instead.
2) What size copper tube does the Nibco 735 cross solder onto?
All four openings are the same size, and the 735 is offered in 1 inch, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2 and 2-1/2 inch. There is no reducing configuration, so a branch that needs a smaller size takes a reducer or a reducing bushing at the cup.
3) Are the ends of the 735 cross threaded or sweat?
Sweat. All four ends are solder cups (C x C x C x C), so the copper tube slides inside the fitting and gets soldered or brazed. Nothing threads on. If you need a threaded takeoff on one leg, adapt off the cup with a male or female adapter.
4) When would I use a cross instead of two tees on a copper main?
A cross carries the run straight through and branches in two opposite directions from a single fitting, so you get both takeoffs at the same point with one joint set instead of two tees and a short nipple between them. That matters on tight mechanical rooms and on fire protection mains where branch lines leave the main back to back. If the two branches are offset from each other, use two tees.
5) Is the Nibco 735 cross cast or wrought copper?
Cast. The 735 is a cast bronze body per ASTM B584 Alloy C84400, not a wrought copper fitting. It is dezincification resistant, and material and workmanship follow ASME B16.18. Cast bodies are the usual choice in larger sizes and in crosses, where a wrought version is often not made.
6) Will this cross work on a hydronic heating or chilled water system?
Yes, that's a listed application. The 735 is rated by Nibco for heating, HVAC, industrial and irrigation service as well as commercial plumbing and fire protection. Since the drinking water restriction is the only service limit called out, closed-loop hydronic and chilled water lines in copper are fair use for it.
7) How do I identify the right Nibco 735 cross by part number?
Nibco assigns a separate MPN to each size on the 735: B271100 for 1 inch, B271450 for 1-1/4, B271900 for 1-1/2, B272450 for 2, and B272900 for 2-1/2. Quote the B number rather than the 735 series number alone, since 735 covers the whole size range.
8) Does the 735 cross come with solder or flux?
No. It's the bare cast bronze fitting only. You supply the solder or brazing alloy, flux, and any cleaning abrasive. Nibco publishes copper fitting installation instructions covering joint prep and heating, and on a cast bronze body of this mass in 2 and 2-1/2 inch expect longer heat time than a wrought fitting of the same size.
