1) Can I use the Nibco 749 bronze wye on a potable water line?
No. The 749 cast bronze wye is prohibited from use in U.S. drinking water applications after January 3, 2014. It is cast from ASTM B584 Alloy C84400, which is not a lead-free potable alloy under current rules. Use it on non-potable work: hydronic heating, HVAC, fire protection, irrigation, and industrial process lines. For potable copper branches you need a lead-free wrought copper or lead-free brass fitting instead.
2) How does the Nibco 749 wye connect to copper tube, and does it need threading?
All three openings are solder cups, C x C x C, so the tube slips into the cup and gets sweated with solder or brazed. No threads anywhere on the fitting and no adapters needed if you are running copper tube. Material and workmanship follow ASME B16.18.
3) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 749 45-degree wye come in?
Three sizes: 1-1/4 inch (B345600), 1-1/2 inch (B345750), and 2 inch (B345850). All three are full-size run and branch, meaning the branch matches the run size, so there is no reducing configuration in the 749.

Yes on both. The 749 cast bronze wye is listed for commercial plumbing, fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial, irrigation, and residential plumbing service. Since it is a non-potable fitting, fire protection and closed-loop hydronic work are exactly where it belongs.
5) Is the Nibco 749 wye cast bronze or wrought copper, and does that matter for dezincification?
Cast bronze, ASTM B584 Alloy C84400, and it is rated dezincification resistant. That matters on systems with aggressive or high-chloride water where standard brass can lose zinc and fail at the fitting. Cast bronze bodies also hold up better on larger-diameter branch fittings than thin wrought stock.
6) Is the 749 a single wye or a double wye?
Single wye. One run in, one angled branch out, three solder cups total. If you need two opposing branches off a single fitting you are looking for a double wye, not the 749.
7) Do I need any special prep or flux to solder this bronze wye to copper tube?
It sweats like any solder-cup fitting: clean the tube end and the cup, flux both, seat the tube fully, and heat. Because the body is cast bronze rather than thin wrought copper it carries more mass, so give it a bit more heat time than a wrought fitting of the same size before the solder will draw.
