1) Does the Nibco 810 wye solder onto copper DWV pipe, or is it threaded?
All three openings on the Nibco 810 wye are solder cups (C x C x C), so it sweats directly onto copper DWV tube with solder or braze. There are no threads on any branch. If you need a threaded takeoff, you'd have to solder in a separate adapter.
2) What is a 45-degree wye used for in a DWV system versus a sanitary tee?
The 810 is a 45 degree fitting (a 1/8 bend) that takes a branch off a continuous drain line at a sweeping angle, which keeps waste flowing in the direction of the main and is what you want for horizontal-to-horizontal and horizontal-to-vertical drainage connections. A sanitary tee turns the branch at a much sharper angle and is normally restricted to vertical drops. Combine the wye with a 45 elbow when you need the branch to end up running horizontally.
3) Can I get a Nibco 810 wye with a smaller branch instead of all three openings the same size?
Yes. Along with the straight sizes in 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 3 and 4 inch, the 810 comes in reducing patterns: 2 x 2 x 1-1/2, 2 x 2 x 1-1/4, 2 x 1-1/2 x 2, 2 x 1-1/2 x 1-1/2, 3 x 3 x 2, 3 x 3 x 1-1/2, 4 x 4 x 3 and 4 x 4 x 2. That covers taking a 1-1/2 inch lav or sink branch off a 2 inch line, or a 2 inch branch off a 4 inch main, without adding bushings.
4) Is the Nibco 810 wye cast bronze or wrought copper?
Cast bronze, ASTM B584 Alloy C84400, with material and workmanship per ASME B16.23. It is also dezincification resistant, which matters on waste and vent lines carrying aggressive water.
5) What size Nibco 810 wye do I need for a 4 inch copper soil stack?
Order the 4 inch straight wye, MPN E091050, when all three openings take 4 inch tube. If you are branching a 3 inch line off a 4 inch stack, use E091100 (4 x 4 x 3); for a 2 inch branch, E091150 (4 x 4 x 2).
6) Can I use the Nibco 810 wye on a pressure water line?
No. The 810 is a DWV fitting for drain, waste and vent only. DWV copper tube and fittings are not rated for pressurized supply service; use a pressure-rated copper fitting for water distribution.
