Nibco E079350 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 808 DWV 22-1/2 degree elbow come in?
The Nibco 808 is offered in four DWV copper tube sizes: 1-1/4 inch (E079250), 1-1/2 inch (E079300), 2 inch (E079350), and 3 inch (E079400). All are straight size, meaning both ends take the same tube size, so there is no reducing version in the 808.
2) Is the Nibco 808 elbow a solder fitting or does it press or thread?
Solder only. Both ends are solder cups (C x C), so the fitting slips over the outside of copper DWV tube and gets sweated with solder or brazed. There is no thread and no press end, so you need a torch, flux and solder on site.
3) Can I use the Nibco 808 elbow on a pressure water line?
No. The 808 is a DWV fitting, built for drain, waste and vent service only. DWV copper tube and fittings are thin wall and not intended for pressurized supply piping. For potable or pressure work, use a wrought or cast pressure copper fitting sized to Type L or Type M tube.
4) What is a 22-1/2 degree elbow used for on a DWV line?
It is the 1/16 bend, used where a drain, waste or vent run needs a gentle offset rather than a full turn. Two of them back to back give you a 45 degree offset around a joist, beam or another line while keeping flow smooth. If you need a sharper change of direction you want a 1/8 bend (45 degree) or a 1/4 bend (90 degree) instead.
5) What is the Nibco 808 elbow actually made of, and will it hold up in an aggressive water system?
It is a cast bronze fitting, ASTM B584 alloy C84400, and it is dezincification resistant, which matters where water chemistry attacks the zinc in lower grade brass. Material and workmanship are per ASME B16.23, the standard for cast copper alloy solder joint DWV fittings.
6) Is the Nibco 808 elbow approved for commercial buildings or just residential?
Both. The 808 is specified for commercial and residential plumbing systems, so the same fitting covers a multi-family riser stack, a hospital or school DWV run, and a single house.
7) Do I need anything besides the fitting to make up the joint?
The 808 ships as the bare elbow. You supply the DWV copper tube, flux, solder and heat. Nibco publishes copper fitting installation instructions covering cleaning, fluxing and heating, and following them matters most on the 3 inch size, where the larger mass takes longer to bring up to temperature and the joint is easy to overheat at one spot.
