1) How does the Nibco 903 DWV adapter connect on each end?
One end is a solder cup that slips over copper DWV tube, the other is female NPT pipe thread. That makes it the transition point between a soldered copper drain line and a threaded connection such as a trap adapter, cleanout plug, or threaded nipple. 2) Can I use the Nibco 903 copper female adapter on a pressure water line, or is it drain only?
It is a DWV fitting, built for drain, waste and vent service. DWV copper fittings are thinner walled than pressure fittings, so do not substitute it on a potable or pressurized supply line. For a soldered water line to threaded transition you want a pressure-rated copper female adapter instead.
3) Is the Nibco 903 the right fitting to pick up a 1-1/2 inch P-trap on a copper drain?
It works where the trap side is threaded. The 903 gives you a 1-1/2 inch female NPT port off a soldered 1-1/2 inch copper DWV stub, so a male-threaded trap adapter or trap union nut thread into it. If the trap connection is a slip joint or a male thread on the drain side instead, you need a male adapter (C x M) rather than this female version.
4) What size copper DWV tube does the Nibco 903 adapter fit?
It is a straight size 1-1/2 inch fitting, so the solder cup takes nominal 1-1/2 inch copper DWV tube and the threaded end is 1-1/2 inch female NPT. There is no size reduction across the fitting.
5) Is the Nibco 903 adapter approved for commercial jobs or just residential?
Both. The 903 is listed for commercial and residential plumbing use, and material and workmanship conform to ASME B16.29 with ASTM B75 alloy C12200 copper.
