1) How does the Nibco 905 soil pipe adapter connect copper DWV tube to cast iron?
The 905 has a solder cup on one end and a spigot on the other. The cup solders to copper DWV tube; the spigot end drops into the hub of cast iron soil pipe, where it gets caulked or gasketed like any other spigot. That C x Spigot configuration is the whole point of the fitting, adapting copper tube over to cast iron soil pipe.
2) Can I use the Nibco 905 adapter on a pressure water line?
No. It's a DWV fitting, built for drain, waste and vent service only. Pressure supply work needs a pressure-rated copper fitting, not a DWV soil adapter.
3) What sizes does the Nibco 905 DWV soil adapter come in?
Two: a 2 inch, part H038550, and a reducing 1-1/2 inch by 2 inch, part H038500. The reducing version lets you run 1-1/2 inch copper DWV into a 2 inch cast iron hub without a separate bushing.

Wrot copper, ASTM B75 alloy C12200, with material and workmanship per ASME B16.29. It's also dezincification resistant, so it isn't going to suffer the dezincification failures you see with some brass fittings in aggressive water.
5) Do I need solder and flux for the Nibco 905, or is it a press fitting?
Solder. The copper side is a cup joint you have to clean, flux and sweat, so plan on solder, flux, and a torch. The spigot side is a mechanical joint into the cast iron hub and needs whatever your hub calls for, lead and oakum or a gasket. Nibco publishes copper fitting installation instructions for the joint prep.
6) Will the Nibco 905 work on a no-hub cast iron system?
The 905's spigot is sized to go into a cast iron soil pipe hub, which is the bell-and-spigot style joint. If you're working no-hub, you'd be banding the connection instead, so confirm your cast iron is hub type before ordering this adapter.
7) Is the Nibco 905 adapter approved for commercial jobs or just residential?
Both. Nibco lists the 905 for commercial and residential plumbing systems, and it's the standard way to transition a copper DWV branch into an existing cast iron stack in either setting.
