Nibco NBC-603 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Does the Nibco 603 adapter solder onto copper tube on one end and thread onto pipe on the other?
That is exactly what the 603 does. One end is a solder cup that takes copper tube, the other is a female NPT thread, so the connection is C x F (NPT). Use it where a soldered copper run has to pick up a threaded component, a valve, a gauge, a pump, or threaded equipment. Sweat the cup with solder, and make the NPT joint with thread sealant or tape in the normal way.
2) I need to go from 1/2 inch copper to a 3/4 inch female thread. Does Nibco make the 603 in reducing sizes?
Yes, and that is a big part of the 603 range. Reducing combinations include 1/8 x 1/4, 1/4 x 3/8, 3/8 x 3/4, 3/8 x 1/2, 3/8 x 1/4, 1/2 x 3/4 (part 9024750), 1/2 x 3/8, 1/2 x 1/4, 5/8 x 3/4, 5/8 x 1/2, 3/4 x 1, 1 x 1-1/4, 1 x 3/4, 1 x 1/2, 1-1/4 x 1-1/2, 1-1/4 x 1, 1-1/2 x 2, 1-1/2 x 1-1/4 and 2 x 1-1/2. So the 1/2 copper to 3/4 NPT jump is a single fitting, no bushing needed.
3) What is the difference between the Wrot and Cleaned and Bagged versions of the Nibco 603 adapter?
Both are the same wrot copper adapter; Cleaned and Bagged means the fitting has been cleaned and individually packaged for oxygen and medical gas service, where hydrocarbons and oils cannot be present in the line. Order the CB version for med-gas work: 9024650CB in 1/2 inch, 9024800CB in 1/2 x 3/8, 9024850CB in 1/2 x 1/4, 9024950CB in 3/4 inch, 9025250CB in 1 inch, 9025550CB in 1-1/4 inch, 9025900CB in 1-1/2 inch and 9026150CB in 2 inch. The plain wrot version covers everything else.
4) Is the Nibco 603 copper adapter approved for potable water?
Yes. The 603 is lead-free and certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372, which are the drinking water standards, so it is good for residential and commercial potable plumbing. It is also dezincification resistant, which matters on the threaded end in aggressive water.
5) Can I use a Nibco 603 female adapter on a medical gas or compressed air line?
The 603 is listed for med-gas and compressed air along with fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial and irrigation service. For medical gas it conforms to NFPA 99 Health Care Facilities Gas and Vacuum Systems and Compressed Gas Association Pamphlet G4.1. For med-gas installs specify the Cleaned and Bagged version rather than the standard wrot fitting.
6) Should I use a solder female adapter or a male adapter to connect copper to threaded pipe?
Depends which half of the threaded joint you are providing. The 603 gives you a female NPT socket on the copper side, so the mating component brings the male thread, a male nipple, a threaded valve tailpiece, a hose bibb shank. If the equipment you are tying into has a female port instead, you want a male adapter (C x M) rather than the 603. Check the equipment port before ordering; getting this backwards is the most common reason one of these gets returned.
7) What pipe sizes does the Nibco 603 female adapter come in?
The 603 runs from 1/8 inch up to 3 inch in same-size configurations: 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2 and 3 inch. Common same-size part numbers are 9024650 for 1/2 inch, 9024950 for 3/4 inch, 9025250 for 1 inch and 9026150 for 2 inch.
8) What material is the Nibco 603 adapter, and does it meet ASME B16.22?
It is wrot copper, ASTM B75 alloy C12200. Material and workmanship meet ASME B16.22, and material, workmanship and dimensions meet MSS SP-104. That combination is what lets it be specified on a commercial job where the drawing calls out a wrot copper solder fitting rather than a cast one.
9) I am standardizing a building on one copper-to-thread adapter. Does the Nibco 603 cover both small trim sizes and mains?
It does, which is why it works as a single line item across a facility. Sizes start at 1/8 inch for gauge and instrument taps and run through 1/2 and 3/4 inch for fixture branches up to 2-1/2 and 3 inch for mains and equipment connections, with reducing combinations in between so a size change and a thread transition happen in one fitting.
