Nibco NBC-603-2 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is a Ftg x F copper adapter and when do I use one?
The Nibco 603-2 is a fitting adapter with a fitting-end (Ftg) solder end on one side and female NPT thread on the other. The Ftg end is sized to slip INTO a copper fitting cup, the way a piece of tube would, rather than over the tube. Use it where you are coming out of a fitting socket and need to land on male pipe thread. If you need the solder end to receive tube instead (C x F, tube goes inside the cup), that is a different adapter and the 603-2 will not seat.
2) What sizes does the Nibco 603-2 fitting adapter come in?
Nine orderable combinations across 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 x 3/8, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. The 1/2 x 3/8 is a reducing adapter, so a 1/2 inch fitting socket lands on 3/8 inch female thread. Most sizes are plain wrot; 1/2 x 3/8 and 1 inch are also stocked cleaned and bagged.
3) Can I use a Nibco copper solder adapter on a medical gas line?
Yes, for med-gas the 603-2 is listed for that service and conforms to NFPA 99 Health Care Facilities Gas and Vacuum Systems and Compressed Gas Association Pamphlet G4.1. For that work order the cleaned and bagged version, not the plain wrot: med-gas requires the fitting arrive degreased and sealed. Cleaned and bagged is stocked in 1/2 x 3/8, MPN 9028400CB, and 1 inch, MPN 9028750CB.
4) Is the Nibco 603-2 adapter lead free and approved for potable water?
Lead-free, and certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372, which are the drinking water contact and lead content standards. It is also dezincification resistant. That covers residential and commercial potable plumbing.
5) What material and standards does the Nibco 603-2 copper adapter meet?
Copper, ASTM B75 alloy C12200. Material and workmanship follow ASME B16.22, and material, workmanship and dimensions follow MSS SP-104. Those two are what a spec on a drawing for wrot copper solder fittings normally calls out, so it will hold on a submittal.
6) Can I use this copper adapter on compressed air, fire protection or hydronic heating?
All three are listed services for the 603-2, along with HVAC, industrial and irrigation. The threaded side is female NPT, so it is the transition point where a copper run picks up a threaded valve, gauge, drop or device.
7) What is the difference between the wrot and the cleaned and bagged version of the Nibco 603-2?
Same copper fitting either way. Cleaned and bagged means it ships degreased and individually sealed for oxygen-clean and medical gas service, where any oil residue on the inside of the fitting is a problem. For ordinary plumbing, heating or HVAC work the plain wrot version is what you want. Cleaned and bagged is offered in 1/2 x 3/8 and 1 inch only.
8) Do I need to order a coupling to use a Ftg x F adapter?
Usually not, and that is the point of the fitting end. Because the Ftg side of the 603-2 slips into a fitting cup, you can go straight into an elbow, tee or valve socket without adding a coupling. If you are coming off plain tube instead of a fitting, you either add a coupling or use a C x F adapter. On the threaded side, thread sealant or PTFE tape is on you, it is not supplied.
9) How do I order the right Nibco 603-2 by part number?
Order by MPN and the size follows: 9027650 is 1/4 inch, 9028100 is 3/8 inch, 9028400 is 1/2 x 3/8 inch, 9028750 is 1 inch, 9029000 is 1-1/4 inch, 9029150 is 1-1/2 inch and 9029300 is 2 inch. Add CB for cleaned and bagged, 9028400CB and 9028750CB.
10) Can I press or use a push fitting instead of soldering the Nibco 603-2?
No. The 603-2 has a solder end, so it is brazed or soldered into the fitting socket. There is no press ring or o-ring on it. If the job calls for no open flame, you need a press or push-connect adapter, not this one.
