1) What does Ftg x M mean on the Nibco 604-2 adapter?
Ftg x M means fitting end by male thread. The Ftg end is sized to slip INTO a copper fitting's socket (it behaves like the end of a piece of tube, so it is sometimes called a street end), and the other end is male NPT pipe thread. So the 604-2 lets you go straight from a fitting socket to a threaded connection without an extra length of tube. If you need an end that slips OVER copper tube instead, you want a standard C x M male adapter, not this Ftg version.

Both ends get made up differently, so sequence matters. Thread the male NPT end into the valve or device first with the appropriate sealant, then solder the Ftg end into the copper fitting socket, keeping heat away from the threaded joint and any packing or seals.
