1) What does a Nibco 604 male adapter connect to what?
The Nibco 604 is a C x M adapter: one end is a solder cup that sweats onto copper tube, the other is a male NPT thread. It's what you use to take a soldered copper run into threaded equipment, a valve, a gauge port, or a threaded stub. If you need the opposite (female thread on the fitting), that's a female adapter, not the 604.
2) Can I get a Nibco 604 male adapter where the copper size and the thread size are different?
Yes, and that's most of the range. Alongside the straight sizes (1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2 and 3 inch), the 604 comes in reducing and increasing combinations: 1/8 x 1/4, 3/8 x 1/2, 3/8 x 3/4, 1/2 x 1/4, 1/2 x 3/8, 1/2 x 3/4, 1/2 x 1, 5/8 x 1/2, 5/8 x 3/4, 3/4 x 1, 1 x 3/4, 1 x 1-1/4, 1-1/4 x 3/4, 1-1/4 x 1, 1-1/4 x 1-1/2, 1-1/2 x 1, 1-1/2 x 1-1/4 and 2 x 1-1/2. So you can step a 1/2 inch copper line straight into a 3/4 inch male thread without adding a separate bushing.
3) Is the Nibco 604 copper male adapter lead free and OK for potable water?
Yes. The 604 is lead-free and certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372, which is the drinking-water standard, and it's also dezincification resistant. It's listed for both residential and commercial plumbing service.
4) What is the difference between the wrot and the cleaned-and-bagged Nibco 604 adapter?
Same fitting, different processing. The cleaned and bagged version is degreased and sealed at the factory for oxygen-clean service, which is what medical gas work requires; the plain wrot version is the standard plumbing fitting. Cleaned and bagged is stocked in 1/2, 1/2 x 3/8, 1/2 x 1/4, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. If your job is med gas per NFPA 99, order the CB version.
5) Is a wrot copper male adapter the same as a cast one, and does it matter which I use?
Wrot fittings are formed from drawn copper tube, cast fittings are poured brass or bronze. The 604 is wrot copper, ASTM B75 alloy C12200, made to ASME B16.22 for material and workmanship and MSS SP-104 for dimensions. Wrot is the thinner, tighter-tolerance fitting most trades reach for on solder work; it heats faster and the cup fit is closer, so you use less heat and less solder. Dimensionally it interchanges with a cast fitting of the same nominal size.
6) What pressure is the Nibco 604 copper male adapter rated for?
Select diameters of these Nibco copper fittings are UL 207 Recognized to 700 PSI. The working pressure of a soldered joint in service depends on the solder alloy and the operating temperature, so size the joint to the solder you're using.
7) Can I use a copper male adapter on a fire sprinkler or compressed air line?
Yes. The 604 is listed for fire protection and compressed air, along with heating, HVAC, industrial and irrigation service. The UL 207 Recognition to 700 PSI on select diameters is the listing that matters for fire protection work.
8) What size Nibco male adapter do I need to go from 3/4 inch copper into a 3/4 inch NPT valve?
That's the straight 3/4 inch 604, MPN 9030950 in wrot, or 9030950CB cleaned and bagged. The first number in the size call-out is the solder cup for the copper tube, the second (where there is one) is the male NPT thread. On the straight sizes both ends are the same nominal size.
9) How large does the Nibco 604 male adapter go for a commercial main?
Up to 3 inch. The large end of the range runs 2 inch (9032300), 2 x 1-1/2 inch (9032450), 2-1/2 inch (9032660) and 3 inch (9032820). Note the cleaned and bagged option tops out at 2 inch, so the 2-1/2 and 3 inch are wrot only.
10) Do I need thread sealant on a copper male adapter, and can I solder it after it's threaded in?
The NPT thread on the 604 is a tapered pipe thread and needs sealant or tape like any NPT joint; the solder cup does not. Sweat the copper side first, or let the fitting cool before you make up the thread, so you're not putting torch heat into a made-up threaded connection or into the packing of the valve you just threaded it into. Nibco publishes installation instructions for these copper fittings.
11) Are copper fittings a good choice for a LEED or sustainable building spec?
Copper's reusability is why it holds up on sustainable projects, and Nibco calls out lead-free service explicitly as a listed use for the 604. The fittings are made in an ISO 9001 certified facility, in ASTM B75 alloy C12200.
