Nibco NBC-600-2 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the difference between a fitting reducer and a coupling reducer on copper tube?
The Nibco 600-2 is a fitting reducer, meaning one end is a male solder end (Ftg) that slips INTO the cup of another fitting, and the other end is a solder cup (C) that accepts tube. A coupling reducer has cups on both ends and only joins tube to tube. Use the 600-2 when you need to drop a size right at the outlet of an elbow, tee, or valve without adding a stub of tube between them.
2) Will a Nibco 600-2 fitting reducer fit into the cup of an existing copper elbow or tee?
That is exactly what the Ftg end is for. The male solder end on the 600-2 is sized to the outside diameter of copper tube of that nominal size, so it seats into the socket of any standard solder-cup fitting or valve of the same size. The other end is a solder cup, so tube of the smaller size drops into it. Both joints are soldered, no threads involved.
3) What size reductions does the Nibco 600-2 copper fitting reducer come in?
Reductions run from 1/4 inch x 1/8 inch at the small end up to 8 inch x 6 inch at the large end, with 56 size combinations in between. The large end is always the Ftg (male) side and the smaller listed size is the cup. Common branch drops are all covered: 3/4 x 1/2, 1 x 3/4, 1-1/4 x 1, 1-1/2 x 1-1/4, 2 x 1-1/2, 3 x 2, 4 x 3, 6 x 4. Big jumps in one fitting are available too, such as 2 x 1/2, 4 x 2, 6 x 2, and 8 x 2, so you can go from a main to a small branch without stacking reducers.
4) Is the Nibco 600-2 reducer approved for potable water and lead free?
Yes on both counts. The 600-2 is lead-free and certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN-61 and 372, which are the drinking water and lead content standards inspectors look for on domestic water. It is also dezincification resistant, so it holds up in aggressive water. Material and workmanship follow ASME B16.22, with material, workmanship and dimensions per MSS SP-104, and MSS SP-109 on the 5 inch through 8 inch sizes.
5) Can I use this copper reducer on a medical gas line?
Yes. The 600-2 meets NFPA 99 Health Care Facilities Gas and Vacuum Systems and Compressed Gas Association Pamphlet G4.1 for medical gas, and med-gas is one of its listed system uses. For that service order the Cleaned and Bagged option rather than plain Wrot, since med-gas installations require the fitting to arrive degreased and sealed and the bag not opened until the joint is made.
6) What is the difference between the Wrot and Cleaned and Bagged versions of the Nibco 600-2?
Same wrot copper fitting, different processing. Wrot is the standard fitting for general plumbing, hydronic, and HVAC work. Cleaned and Bagged has been degreased of oils and residue and sealed in a bag, which is what medical gas and oxygen-service work require, and what some compressed air and high-purity specs call for. If your drawing says cleaned for oxygen service or references NFPA 99, order Cleaned and Bagged.
7) What systems can a Nibco 600-2 copper fitting reducer be used on besides domestic water?
Listed system uses cover commercial and residential plumbing, compressed air, fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial, irrigation, and medical gas. That range is why one fitting shows up across a building: chilled and hot water, a copper fire sprinkler branch, a shop air drop, and the domestic riser can all take the same 600-2. Select diameters are UL 207 Recognized to 700 PSI.
8) Do I need a separate reducer if I already have a copper tee, or can I reduce right at the tee?
You can reduce right at the tee. Because the 600-2 has a male Ftg end, it sockets straight into the tee's cup with no length of tube between, then takes the smaller tube in its cup. That saves a coupling and a short nipple of tube on every branch drop, and it keeps the takeoff tight to the fitting where space is limited, like a wall cavity or a ceiling above a lay-in grid.
9) Can I go from 4 inch copper down to 2 inch in a single fitting?
Yes. The 600-2 is made in 4 inch x 2 inch, along with 4 x 2-1/2, 4 x 3, and 4 x 3-1/2, so a two-size drop is one fitting and one pair of joints instead of stacked reducers. The same holds further up the range: 5 x 2, 6 x 2, and 8 x 2 are all built, so a large main can feed a small branch directly.
10) Does the Nibco 600-2 work with press or push fittings, or is it solder only?
Solder only. Both ends of the 600-2 are solder connections, the Ftg end soldering into another fitting's cup and the C end taking tube. There is no O-ring, no press bead, and no thread, so it has to be sweated or brazed. If your job is being run in press, you need a press reducer instead; this one is for a torch.
11) What copper alloy is the Nibco 600-2 reducer made from?
Wrot copper, ASTM B75 Alloy C12200, which is standard DHP copper tube alloy. That matters for two reasons: it solders and brazes the same as the Type L or Type M tube you are joining it to, and it is the same metal, so there is no dissimilar-metal corrosion at the joint the way there is when copper meets a steel or galvanized fitting.
12) Are small copper reducers like 1/4 x 1/8 and 3/8 x 1/4 available for instrument and refrigeration-size tube?
Yes. The small end of the range includes 1/4" x 1/8", 3/8" x 1/8", 3/8" x 1/4", 1/2" x 1/4", 1/2" x 3/8", and 5/8" x 1/4", plus the 5/8 inch sizes that come up on gauge, drain, and small-bore runs. These are the same wrot copper C12200 construction as the large sizes.
