Nibco 9008450PC – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does Ftg x Prs mean on the Nibco PC600-2 copper press reducer?
One end is a fitting end (Ftg), the other is a press socket (Prs). The fitting end is sized to slip INTO another fitting's socket like a piece of tube, and the press end accepts copper tube that you crimp. That combination is what lets you drop a size straight off an elbow, tee or coupling without adding a stub of tube between them. If both of your connections are tube ends, you want a press x press reducing coupling instead, not this one.
2) What size reductions does the Nibco PC600-2 press reducer come in?
Reductions run from 3/4 x 1/2 inch up to 4 x 3 inch, 26 combinations in all. The 1-1/2 inch and 2 inch bodies carry the widest choice: 2 inch reduces to 1-1/2, 1-1/4, 1, 3/4 or 1/2 inch, and 1-1/2 inch reduces to 1-1/4, 1, 3/4 or 1/2 inch. Larger drops include 2-1/2 x 1, 3 x 1-1/4, 4 x 2 and 4 x 2-1/2 inch, so you can take a main down several sizes in one fitting rather than stacking two. There is also a same-size 1 inch version (MPN 9008450PC) that works as a fitting-to-press adapter rather than a reducer.
3) Can I use Nibco press copper fittings on a domestic potable water line?
Yes. The PC600-2 reducer is lead-free and third party certified to UPC, and it is built for potable, hot, chilled and process water in both residential and commercial plumbing. It also covers HVAC, heating, irrigation and automatic sprinkler systems, so the same fitting serves the domestic and the mechanical side of a building.
4) What pressure and temperature can a Nibco copper press reducer handle?
200 psi CWP, with a service range of -20 F to 250 F. That covers standard domestic water pressure, hydronic heating loops and chilled water lines. Steam is outside it.
5) How do I know a Nibco press joint was actually crimped?
A raised "N" witness mark appears on the fitting once it has been properly pressed. That is your visual check walking a line before it gets covered, and it is the answer for an inspector asking how you verified every joint. Nibco publishes Press System installation instructions covering the tool, jaw and chain requirements.
6) Can I press a reducer straight into the end of an existing elbow or tee?
That is exactly what the fitting end is for. The Ftg side inserts into the socket of another copper fitting, so you can reduce right at an elbow, tee or coupling with no length of tube between the two. The press side then takes the smaller branch tube. If instead you are reducing in the middle of a straight run of tube, both ends need to be press sockets and this fitting will not serve.
7) Can Nibco press fittings be buried or run underground?
Yes, the press fittings can be installed underground. The reducer body is ASTM B75 alloy C12200 copper and dezincification resistant, which is what makes direct burial workable on a water service or an irrigation run.
8) Should I use a press reducer or a solder reducer on a copper repipe?
Press is the call where you cannot get a flame in: occupied units, tenant spaces, near finished framing, or anywhere a hot work permit is the bottleneck. The joint is mechanical, made with a tool and jaw, and it goes together in seconds per fitting. Solder still wins where you already own the torch and the run is open and dry. What you give up with press is that every size needs the matching jaw or chain, so a job spanning 1/2 inch up to 4 inch needs the tooling to cover it.
9) Will a Nibco press fitting join to type L or type M copper tube?
The press end joins seamless copper water tube, so type L and type M in the nominal size marked on the fitting both press up. What it will not take is a pipe of another material. This is a copper system fitting, so PEX, CPVC and steel need a transition fitting to get onto it.
10) Are Nibco press fittings approved for use in New York City?
Yes. Nibco Press System fittings are approved under New York City MEA 9-97-E, Vol. 3, when assembled with the appropriate Nibco indicator flag. The flag is part of the approval, so on an NYC job it is not optional.
11) What standards do Nibco PC600-2 copper press reducers comply with?
The reducer complies with ASME B16.51 performance and is third party certified to UPC and to the performance requirements of CSA MSE 13 and PS-117. The copper is ASTM B75 alloy C12200. For a spec submittal on an institutional or government job, those are the lines that go on the sheet.
12) Which MPN do I order for a 2 inch to 1 inch copper press reducer?
2 x 1 inch is MPN 9009155PC. Nearby drops off a 2 inch body: 2 x 1-1/2 is 9009055PC, 2 x 1-1/4 is 9009106PC, 2 x 3/4 is 9009206PC and 2 x 1/2 is 9009255PC. Order by the MPN, not by the series number, since PC600-2 covers all 26 size combinations.
13) Is copper press piping a good choice for a LEED or sustainable building project?
Copper is reusable at end of life, which is what puts it on sustainable projects, and the Nibco press reducers are lead-free and dezincification resistant. Joints are made cold, so there is no flame, no flux and no solder waste on site.
