1) What does Ftg x Prs mean on the Nibco PC607-2 elbow, and how does it connect?
One end is a fitting (street) end that slips into the socket of another copper fitting, and the other is a press end that goes over copper tube and gets crimped with a press tool. So the PC607-2 lets you turn 90 degrees straight off an existing fitting without adding a short stub of tube. Only the press end needs the tool; the fitting end solders or seats into the mating fitting socket.
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco PC607-2 press elbow come in?
Nine sizes, 1/2 inch through 4 inch: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3 and 4 inch. All are straight size, so the press end and the fitting end are the same nominal size. If you need to change size at the turn you need a reducing fitting instead.
3) Can I use a Nibco press copper elbow on a potable water line?
Yes. The PC607-2 is lead-free wrot copper, ASTM B75 alloy C12200, third party certified to UPC and to the performance requirements of CSA MSE 13 and PS-117. It is used in residential and commercial potable, hot, chilled and process water, plus heating, HVAC, irrigation and automatic sprinkler systems.
4) Do I need a special press tool for the Nibco PC607-2, or can I solder it?
The press end requires a press tool with the jaw or chain sized to that fitting; it is not a solder joint and cannot be sweated. NIBCO sells the pressing tools, jaws and chains as part of the Press System. The other end of the PC607-2 is a fitting (street) end that seats into another fitting socket, so on that side you are working with a standard copper socket connection.
5) What pressure and temperature is the Nibco Press System copper elbow rated for?
200 psi cold working pressure, with a service range of -20 F to 250 F. That covers domestic water, hydronic heating and chilled water loops. The seal is an elastomeric press joint, so keep it inside that band; it is not a steam fitting.
6) Can Nibco press copper fittings be buried underground?
Yes, NIBCO states the Press System fittings can be installed underground. The body is dezincification resistant C12200 copper. Follow the Press System installation instructions for burial prep.
7) How do I know a Nibco press joint was actually crimped?
A raised "N" witness mark shows on the fitting once it has been properly pressed. On a walk-through you can eyeball a run of PC607-2 elbows and see which joints got the jaw and which got missed, without pressure testing first.
8) What is the difference between a street elbow and a regular 90 on copper?
A street (Ftg) elbow has one male end sized to drop straight into another fitting's socket, so you can join two fittings back to back with no tube between them. A regular 90 has two female sockets and needs a piece of tube on each side. The PC607-2 is the street version with a press end on the other side, which is what you want in tight mechanical rooms or coming off a valve or tee where there is no room for a stub.
