1) Does the Nibco PC600-DS coupling have a stop, or is it a repair coupling?
It has a stop. The PC600-DS is a straight size coupling with stop, meaning the tube bottoms out at a center ridge and each end seats to a fixed depth. That is what you want for new work, but it will not slide over a fixed run to close a gap. For a repair splice where both pipe ends are captive, you need a stopless coupling instead, not this one.
2) Is the Nibco PC600-DS press coupling lead-free and approved for potable drinking water?
Lead-free, and third party certified to UPC. The coupling is wrot copper to ASTM B75 alloy C12200, dezincification resistant, and certified to the performance requirements of CSA MSE 13 and PS-117. It joins seamless copper water tube in potable, hot, chilled and process water systems, so it is used on residential and commercial potable plumbing.
3) What pressure and temperature can a Nibco press coupling handle on a hydronic or chilled water line?
Rated 200 psi CWP over a range of -20 F to 250 F. That covers heating and HVAC hydronic loops, chilled water, and domestic hot water in commercial buildings. The same coupling is used on automatic sprinkler systems, irrigation, and both residential and commercial plumbing.
4) Can I use one press coupling to go from 3/4 inch to 1/2 inch copper?
No. The PC600-DS is a straight size coupling, so both ends take the same tube size. Stepping from 3/4 down to 1/2 needs a reducing coupling or a reducer, not this part. Order the PC600-DS only when both pipe ends are the same nominal size.
5) Will the PC600-DS press coupling work on type M, L or K copper tube?
The coupling is made to join seamless copper water tube, and it is sized by nominal tube size from 1/2 inch up to 4 inch. Press fittings seat on the outside diameter of the tube, and copper water tube of a given nominal size shares the same OD across the wall types, so the coupling engages the tube by size rather than by wall thickness. Cut square, deburr, and mark your insertion depth before pressing.
6) Should I use a press coupling or sweat a solder coupling on copper?
Press is a cold mechanical joint made with a tool and jaw, so there is no torch, no flux, and no hot work permit or fire watch. That is the reason most crews switch to it on occupied buildings, ceilings, and finished spaces. Solder still has a place where you have no tool or jaw for the size in hand, or where the tube is wet and you can dry it. The PC600-DS is the press version, press on both ends, and it needs the pressing tool and the matching jaw or chain for the size you are joining.
7) How do I know a Nibco press joint is actually crimped?
Look for the N. When the fitting is properly crimped, a witness mark shaped like an N is clearly visible on the pressed end. That is the visual check an inspector or a foreman can make down the run without pressure testing every joint. Both ends of the coupling press, so both get checked.
8) Can a Nibco press copper coupling be buried underground?
