1) Will the Nibco PC600-R press coupling work on Type L copper tube, or do I need a different fitting?
The PC600-R is a press-to-press reducing coupling made for seamless copper water tube, so it presses onto standard copper tube in potable, hot, chilled and process water lines for plumbing and HVAC. Both ends are press (Prs x Prs), so nothing gets soldered. It is not a solder or threaded fitting, and it will not join PEX, CPVC or steel pipe. If the run you are tying into is threaded or sweat, you need a press x female, press x male or press x solder adapter to make the transition first.
2) What size reductions does the Nibco PC600-R reducing coupling come in?
Twenty two reducing combinations, from 3/4 x 1/2 inch up to 4 x 2 inch. The PC600-R is a lead-free copper fitting, cast in ASTM B75 alloy C12200 copper and dezincification resistant. It is third party certified to UPC and to the performance requirements of CSA MSE 13 and PS-117, and complies with ASME B16/51 performance. That is the package a plumbing inspector looks for on potable water. Nibco lists it for residential and commercial potable plumbing along with heating, HVAC, irrigation and automatic sprinkler systems.
4) What pressure and temperature can a Nibco press copper fitting handle on a hydronic heating loop?
200 psi CWP, with a service range of -20 F to 250 F. That covers a standard hydronic heating loop, chilled water, and domestic hot water. The 250 F ceiling is the number to check against before using it on anything running hotter, such as a steam or high temperature process line.
5) How do I know a Nibco press fitting was actually crimped properly?
Nibco Press System fittings show a raised N witness mark that is clearly visible once the joint is properly crimped. Walk the run and look for the N on every fitting before you fill the system, that is your visual check that no joint got skipped, which is the usual failure on a press install rather than a bad press itself. Nibco publishes Press System installation instructions covering the procedure.
6) Should I use press couplings or sweat solder fittings for a copper repipe in an occupied building?
Press wins where you cannot pull a hot work permit or run a torch. The Nibco Press System joins copper tube with a mechanical crimp instead of flame and solder, so there is no open flame around finished ceilings, tenants or sprinkler heads, and no wet-line drying problem before you can make the joint. You do need the matching Nibco pressing tool, jaws or chains for the size you are working. Sweat fittings still make sense when the tool is not on the truck or the sizes are one-offs. Solder and press fittings can be mixed on the same system using adapters.
7) Can Nibco press copper couplings be buried underground for an irrigation or yard line?
Yes, Nibco states the press fittings can be installed underground, and irrigation is one of the listed system uses along with commercial and residential plumbing. The copper is dezincification resistant, which is what matters for a buried joint. Direct burial rules still come from your local code and the tube type you are running.
8) What is the Nibco part number for a 1-1/2 x 1-1/4 press reducing coupling?
