1) What is a repair coupling with no stop, and when do I use one instead of a regular press coupling?
The Nibco PC601 is a repair (no stop) coupling, meaning there is no internal shoulder inside the fitting. That lets you slide the whole coupling onto one tube, cut out a damaged section or make up a closure joint, then slide the coupling back and center it across the gap before pressing. A standard coupling with a stop won't slide because the shoulder halts the tube, so it can't be used where both pipe ends are already fixed in place. Use the no-stop version for repairs and tie-ins; use a stopped coupling for new runs where you want the tube positively centered.
2) Do I have to mark the insertion depth myself on a Nibco PC601 no-stop repair coupling?
Yes, and it's the step people skip. Because the PC601 has no internal stop, nothing inside the fitting tells you how far the tube is in. Mark the required insertion depth on both tubes, slide the coupling to split the difference so each end is fully engaged, then press each side. Both ends are press (Prs x Prs), so the coupling gets two crimps, one per side. When the crimp is made correctly the "N" witness mark shows on the fitting.
3) Does a Nibco PC601 press repair coupling work on Type L or Type M copper tube?
The PC601 joins seamless copper water tube, sized by nominal tube size from 1/2 inch to 4 inch. Copper water tube of a given nominal size has the same outside diameter whether it's Type K, L or M, and the press seal grips that OD, so the coupling makes up on any of them at the matching nominal size. Wall thickness affects the tube's own pressure rating, not the fit of the fitting.
4) What pressure and temperature can a Nibco PC601 press coupling handle?
200 psi CWP, with a service range of -20 degrees F to 250 degrees F. That covers domestic hot and cold water, chilled water and hydronic heating loops. It's outside the range for steam or for anything running above 250 degrees F.
5) Can a Nibco press coupling be buried underground or poured in a slab?
Nibco Press System fittings can be installed underground, so a PC601 repair coupling is acceptable for a buried copper repair. The joint is a mechanical press seal, not solder, so there's no flame or flux involved in a trench or a crawlspace.
6) Do I need a special tool to install a Nibco PC601 press coupling?
Yes, this is not a hand-tightened or soldered fitting. It requires a press tool with the correct jaw or chain for the tube size, and Nibco supplies pressing tools, jaws and chains as part of the Press System. Sizes 2-1/2, 3 and 4 inch generally take a chain or ring rather than a standard jaw, so confirm your tool covers the large diameters before ordering those.
7) Can I press a repair coupling onto a copper line that still has water in it?
Press joints don't need a dry, flame-free line the way soldering does, which is the practical reason crews reach for a no-stop repair coupling on an occupied building. The tube ends still have to be cut square, deburred and clean, and the surface dry enough for the seal to seat. Follow the Nibco Press System installation instructions for preparation and insertion depth before you crimp.
8) What material is the Nibco PC601 coupling and will it hold up in aggressive water?
ASTM B75 alloy C12200 wrot copper, and it's dezincification resistant. C12200 is the same copper as the tube it joins, so there's no dissimilar-metal junction to worry about at the coupling itself.
