Nibco NBC-606-2 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does Ftg x C mean on the Nibco 606-2 45-degree elbow?
Ftg x C means one end is a male fitting end (street end) sized to slip into a solder cup, and the other end is a female solder cup that accepts copper tube. So the 606-2 lets you come straight out of another fitting's cup and turn 45 degrees without adding a short stub of tube between them. Both ends are solder joints, not press or threaded.
2) What is the difference between the Wrot and Cleaned and Bagged versions of the Nibco 606-2 elbow?
Same wrot copper fitting, different preparation. Cleaned and Bagged is degreased and individually bagged for oxygen and medical gas work, where the interior has to stay free of oil and particulate until the joint is brazed. Plain Wrot is the standard plumbing and hydronic stock. Cleaned and Bagged runs in 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch only, so 1/4, 5/8, 2-1/2 and 3 inch come as plain wrot. If the job is med gas, order the CB version, MPN 9046200CB through 9046700CB.
3) Is the Nibco 606-2 copper elbow approved for medical gas piping?
Med gas is a listed system use for the 606-2, and the fitting is stated to conform to NFPA 99 Health Care Facilities Gas and Vacuum Systems and Compressed Gas Association Pamphlet G4.1 for medical gas. For that service, take the Cleaned and Bagged option so the fitting arrives degreased and sealed rather than loose wrot stock.
4) Is the Nibco 606-2 elbow lead-free and safe for potable water?
Lead-free and certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372, which is the drinking water standard that matters for potable service. It is also dezincification resistant. That covers residential and commercial potable plumbing.
5) When should I use a 45-degree street elbow instead of a 90-degree elbow?
A 45 is a 1/8 bend, so it turns the line half as far as a 90. Use a pair of them to offset around an obstruction while keeping the run parallel, or to ease a change of direction where a hard 90 would add pressure drop. The 606-2 is the street pattern (male fitting end one side), which saves you a cut of tube when the turn lands right at another fitting's cup. If you need the full quarter turn, that is a 90-degree fitting, not this one.
6) What material and dimensional standard does the Nibco 606-2 wrot copper elbow meet?
Wrot copper, ASTM B75 alloy C12200. Material and workmanship follow ASME B16.22, with material, workmanship and dimensions per MSS SP-104. That is the pair of standards a spec or submittal usually calls out for solder pressure fittings, so the 606-2 answers a B16.22 line item on a drawing.
7) Can I use the Nibco 606-2 elbow on hydronic heating, chilled water or compressed air lines?
Yes. Listed system uses for the 606-2 run well past potable water: heating, HVAC, compressed air, fire protection, irrigation, and industrial service, plus commercial and residential plumbing. It is a soldered pressure fitting, so joint rating on any of those systems comes down to the solder or braze alloy you use, not the fitting.
8) Does a 45-degree Ftg x C copper elbow need solder, or can it be pressed?
Solder only. Both ends of the 606-2 are solder connections, one cup and one male fitting end, so the joints are sweated or brazed with flux and filler. There is no O-ring or press bead, so a press tool does nothing here. For a press system you need press-rated fittings instead.
9) What is the Nibco part number for a 1/2 inch 45-degree street elbow?
1/2 inch plain wrot is MPN 9046200, and the cleaned-and-bagged 1/2 inch is 9046200CB. Going up the run: 3/4 inch is 9046300, 1 inch is 9046400, 1-1/4 inch is 9046500, 1-1/2 inch is 9046600, 2 inch is 9046700. All are the 606-2 45-degree Ftg x C pattern.
