Nibco NBC-606 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Nibco 606 45-degree elbow solder onto standard copper tube, or do I need a threaded fitting?
Both ends of the Nibco 606 are solder cups, C x C, so the copper tube slips inside the cup and gets sweated with solder or brazed. There is no thread on either end. If your run needs to transition to iron pipe or a threaded valve, you need an adapter fitting instead, not this elbow.
2) Can I use a Nibco 606 copper elbow on a medical gas line?
Yes. The 606 is listed for med-gas service and meets NFPA 99 Health Care Facilities Gas and Vacuum Systems and Compressed Gas Association Pamphlet G4.1. For that work order the cleaned and bagged version, which is prepped and sealed for gas service, and keep the bag closed until you are ready to braze.
3) What sizes does the Nibco 606 copper 45-degree elbow come in?
The 606 runs from 1/8 inch up through 8 inch: 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8, 3/4, 7/8, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8 inch. Sizes are nominal copper tube sizes, so a 3/4 inch elbow takes 3/4 inch nominal type L or M tube, not 3/4 inch outside diameter.
4) Should I use a 45-degree elbow or a 90 for offsetting around an obstruction?
A pair of 45s is the usual call for an offset. The 606 turns the line 45 degrees (a 1/8 bend), so two of them let you jog the pipe around a beam or duct and come back parallel to the original run, with less pressure drop and less turbulence than two 90s. Use 90s when you need a hard corner change of direction. On drainage-style or high-velocity runs the gentler 45 is what keeps flow noise and friction loss down.
5) Can I use the Nibco 606 elbow on a fire sprinkler line or compressed air?
Yes on both. The 606 is rated for fire protection, compressed air, heating, HVAC, industrial and irrigation service as well as residential and commercial plumbing. Select diameters are UL 207 Recognized to 700 PSI. Confirm the pressure class your system requires and match the tube type, since the joint rating on a soldered system depends on the solder alloy and the operating temperature, not the fitting alone.
6) What standard do Nibco 606 copper solder fittings meet for dimensions, so I know they will mate with other brands?
Material and workmanship follow ASME B16.22, and material, workmanship and dimensions follow MSS SP-104. Sizes 5 inch through 8 inch also follow MSS SP-109. Those are the industry solder-joint pressure fitting dimensional standards, so the cups accept any standard-dimension copper tube of the matching nominal size regardless of who made the tube.
7) Do I need to order anything else with the Nibco 606 elbow to make the joint?
The 606 is the fitting only. To sweat it you supply the solder and flux (lead-free solder for potable water) or brazing alloy, plus a tube cutter, emery cloth or a fitting brush, and a torch. For medical gas the joint is brazed with nitrogen purge and no flux, using the cleaned and bagged fitting. Nothing ships attached to the elbow itself.
8) I need a 5/8 or 7/8 inch copper 45 for a refrigeration or HVAC line, does Nibco make one?
Yes, the 606 is made in 5/8 inch (MPN 9042860) and 7/8 inch (MPN 9042960), the odd sizes that most plumbing-only lines skip. Both are solder cup on each end and both are the standard wrot version. These are the sizes HVAC techs run into on line sets and coil connections.
9) Is a wrot copper elbow the same as a cast copper fitting?
No. The 606 is wrot copper, formed from drawn ASTM B75 C12200 tube rather than cast. Wrot fittings have thinner, more uniform walls, a tighter cup tolerance and better heat transfer, so they solder faster and take less flame than a cast fitting of the same size. Cast fittings are heavier and are more often reached for in larger DWV work. For pressure copper systems wrot is the standard choice.
10) Is the Nibco 606 a close rough elbow, and what does that mean for tight spaces?
The 606 is a close rough pattern 45-degree elbow, meaning a short-bodied fitting with minimal material past the solder cups. That is what you want in tight mechanical rooms, close-spaced risers or where two fittings land near each other, since there is less body length eating into the run. Allow the cup depth on each side when you cut and measure your tube.
