1) What do the two ends of the Nibco 703-2 adapter connect to?
The 703-2 is a Ftg x F adapter: one end is a fitting (male solder) end that slips into the socket of another copper fitting, and the other end is female NPT thread. So it takes you from a soldered copper run into a threaded connection, like a valve, gauge, or nipple. Because the solder end is a Ftg end rather than a cup, it seats inside the next fitting rather than over the tube.
2) Can I use the Nibco 703-2 bronze adapter on potable water?
No. The 703-2 is cast from ASTM B584 alloy C84400, and use in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. Keep it to non-potable service. It is used in commercial plumbing, fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial, irrigation, and residential plumbing systems that are not potable. For a potable line you need a fitting cast in a lead-free alloy.
3) What sizes does the Nibco 703-2 fitting adapter come in?
Six sizes. Four are reducing combinations, 1/2 x 1/4, 3/4 x 1/2, 1 x 3/4, and 1 x 1/2 inch, plus two straight sizes at 2-1/2 and 3 inch. The first figure is the copper fitting end, the second the female NPT thread, so the reducers let you step down to a smaller threaded device without an extra bushing.
4) What is the difference between a Ftg x F adapter and a regular C x F female adapter?
It is which way the solder joint goes. A standard C x F adapter has a cup that slides over the outside of the copper tube. The Nibco 703-2 has a Ftg end, sized like tube itself, so it pushes into the socket of another fitting, an elbow, tee, or valve cup. Use the Ftg version when you are landing directly on a fitting with no stub of tube between. If you have loose tube to solder onto, you want the C x F style instead.
5) Is the Nibco 703-2 bronze or copper, and does it resist dezincification?
Cast bronze, not wrought copper. The alloy is C84400 per ASTM B584 and it is dezincification resistant, which matters on systems with aggressive water chemistry where a brass fitting can lose zinc and fail at the threads. Material and workmanship follow ASME B16.18.
6) Can I use this adapter on a hydronic heating or fire protection line?
Yes. The 703-2 adapter is listed for commercial plumbing, fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial, irrigation, and residential plumbing service. Hydronic heat, chilled water, and sprinkler branch work are all within its intended use, since none of those are potable and the fitting is restricted from drinking water use.
7) Which Nibco part number do I order for a 3/4 inch copper to 1/2 inch NPT adapter?
That is MPN B028650 in the 703-2 series, the 3/4 x 1/2 inch Ftg x F adapter. If you need the full-size versions instead, 2-1/2 inch is B029350 and 3 inch is B029400.
8) Do I need thread sealant with the Nibco 703-2, and can I solder it with the threaded device attached?
The female end is NPT thread, so it needs pipe dope or PTFE tape on the male thread going into it, same as any tapered thread joint. Solder the Ftg end first and let it cool before threading in a valve or device, since torch heat carried through cast bronze will damage seats and seals.
