1) What do the two ends of the Nibco 703-2R-LF fitting adapter connect to?
The 703-2R-LF is a Ftg x F adapter: one end is a fitting (male solder) end that slips into the cup of another copper fitting, and the other end is female NPT thread. It takes you from a soldered copper run into a threaded connection such as a valve, gauge, or nipple.
2) Is the Nibco 703-2R-LF adapter lead-free and approved for potable water?

Use the Ftg version when you are coming straight off a coupling, elbow, or tee socket without adding a stub of tube. If you are soldering onto a cut end of pipe, you want a cup x female adapter instead.
4) What size reducing solder-to-female-thread adapters does Nibco make in the 703-2R-LF?
Three reducing combinations: 1/2 inch by 1/4 inch, 3/4 inch by 1/2 inch, and 1 inch by 3/4 inch. Each drops one nominal size from the copper end to the female thread, so a 3/4 inch copper line lands on a 1/2 inch NPT port.
5) Will a bronze adapter hold up in water that eats brass fittings?
The 703-2R-LF is made from Silicon Performance Bronze alloy and is dezincification resistant, which is the failure mode that cracks ordinary yellow brass in aggressive or high-chloride water. That is the main reason to specify it over a standard brass adapter on a building system you do not want to open up again.
6) Does this Nibco adapter meet the copper fitting design standard our spec calls out?
It is manufactured to ASME B16.18 design standards, the cast copper alloy solder-joint pressure fitting standard usually cited on commercial plumbing drawings.
7) Do I need thread sealant, or is the joint on this adapter solder only?
Both ends need different work. The Ftg side is a soldered joint into a copper fitting socket, so it needs flux, solder, and heat. The female NPT side is a threaded joint and takes pipe dope or PTFE tape on the male threads going into it. Solder the fitting first, then make up the threads once the copper has cooled.
8) Can this Nibco bronze adapter be used on hydronic heating and HVAC lines, not just domestic water?
