The special drop adapter features a solder cup, female NPT thread, and mounting ears. These fittings provide a means for adapting a solder connection to a threaded connection. The ears allow the fitting to be secured to a wall support using a nail or screw. Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets and catalogs for engineering and installation information. In addition to its inherent qualities of beauty, durability and low maintenance, copper's reusability makes it an ideal application in sustainable projects. Nibco B02975L – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What are the ears on this Nibco drop ear adapter for?
The two mounting ears let you fasten the fitting to blocking or a wall support with a nail or screw, so the threaded outlet stays fixed while someone threads a shower arm, tub spout nipple, or hose bibb into it. Without that anchoring the joint takes all the torque. This is the standard fitting for a shower head or spout stub-out in a stud bay.
2) What copper tube sizes does the Nibco 703-5-LF come in?
Two sizes: 1/2 inch (MPN B02975L) and 3/4 inch (MPN B02980L). Both are straight size, meaning the solder cup and the female NPT thread are the same nominal size, so a 1/2 inch adapter is 1/2 inch copper to 1/2 inch FIP.
3) Does the Nibco 703-5-LF meet the fitting spec called out on commercial drawings?
It is manufactured to ASME B16.18 design standards, which is the cast copper alloy solder-joint pressure fitting standard usually named on plumbing specs, plus NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 and 372 for potable service. It's approved for commercial and residential plumbing, fire protection, heating, HVAC, industrial, and irrigation systems.
4) Do I need a drop ear adapter or a plain copper to female adapter for a shower arm?
Use the drop ear version when the threaded outlet has to be anchored, which is the case for a shower arm, tub spout, or hose bibb stub-out. The ears screw to blocking so the fitting can't rotate or pull when the arm is threaded in or leaned on. A plain C x F adapter has no ears and is fine only where the fitting is captured mid-run and nothing torques it.
5) Can I solder this lead-free bronze drop ear adapter the same way as a standard copper fitting?
Yes, the solder cup takes ordinary copper tube and a standard sweat joint. Two things worth doing: thread the nipple or arm in before you solder if you can, or let the fitting cool first, and keep the flame off the threads. Nibco publishes copper fitting installation instructions for the full procedure.
