1) Is the Nibco T-473-B check valve rated for steam service?
Yes, to 300 psi / 20.7 bar saturated steam at 421 degrees F / 216 degrees C. Cold working pressure is 600 psi / 41.4 bar non-shock. That SWP rating is what separates a Class 300 bronze body like the T-473-B from the common Class 125 bronze check, which is not a steam-rated valve.
2) Can I use the Nibco T-473-B on domestic potable water?
No. Use of the T-473-B in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. This is a bronze valve built for steam, heating, and industrial process lines, not for potable supply. For potable water you need a valve carrying a lead-free designation.
3) What pipe connection does the Nibco T-473-B use, and do I need to solder it?
No soldering. Both ends are female NPT thread (FIPT), Class 300 threaded, so it screws onto threaded pipe or nipples with the appropriate thread sealant. That makes it serviceable in place with unions on either side, unlike a solder-end check that has to be cut out.
4) What pipe sizes does the Nibco T-473-B swing check valve come in?
Eight sizes, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch, all female NPT. Order by pipe size to match the line: 1/2 inch is NL93006, 3/4 inch is NL93008, 1 inch is NL9300A, and 2 inch is NL9300D. Above 2 inch this body is not offered, so a larger line needs an iron-body check.
5) Can the Nibco T-473-B be repaired in place instead of replaced when it starts passing backflow?
Yes, and that is the reason to spec it. The disc is a renewable bronze disc and the seat is regrindable, with a screw-in bonnet that opens the valve for service. A leaking check can be taken apart, the seat dressed and the disc swapped, rather than cutting the valve out of the line. On a steam or process line that is running, that matters more than the purchase decision.
6) Should I use a swing check or a spring-loaded lift check on a horizontal steam line?
A swing check like the T-473-B has a straight-through Y-pattern flow path with a hinged disc, so it adds very little pressure drop and cracks open on minimal forward flow. That suits horizontal runs and vertical-up flow. What it does not do is close before reverse flow starts, so on a pump discharge with frequent stop-start cycling or any downward vertical leg, a spring-assisted or silent check is the better choice.
7) Does the Nibco T-473-B meet MSS SP-80 for bronze valves?
Yes, the T-473-B conforms to MSS SP-80, the standard specification engineers cite for bronze gate, globe and check valves. If your drawing calls for a Class 300 bronze swing check to MSS SP-80 with threaded ends, this is that valve.
8) Will a Class 300 threaded check valve thread onto my existing Class 125 threaded pipe fittings?
Yes. The Class 300 rating on the T-473-B describes the pressure class of the valve body, not a different thread. The ends are standard female NPT, so they mate with the same threaded steel or brass pipe and nipples any Class 125 threaded valve uses. You are getting a heavier body and a higher pressure and temperature rating on the same connection.
9) What are the wetted materials in the Nibco T-473-B check valve?
Bronze throughout, body and disc, with a bronze seat seal. There is no rubber or elastomer disc facing to harden or wash out, which is why it holds up on saturated steam to 421 degrees F. Bronze-on-bronze also means the seat can be reground rather than replaced.
