Nibco NJ7300A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Nibco S-413-B swing check valve be installed vertically?
Horizontal installation is the normal orientation, and vertical is allowed only where flow moves upward through the valve. A swing check relies on gravity and flow to seat the disc, so mounting it in a vertical drop leg with downward flow will not let it close properly. If your riser runs down, use a different check style.
2) Does the S-413-B check valve have solder ends or threaded ends?
Solder only. The S-413-B uses female solder cups on both ends, Class 125, so it sweats directly onto copper tube. There is no thread on this body, so if your line is iron pipe or you need a union connection, this is the wrong end style.
3) Can I use this Nibco bronze check valve on a potable water line?
No. Nibco states use of the S-413-B in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. It is intended for non-potable service such as heating water, steam, and general mechanical piping. For domestic water you need a valve certified to the lead-free requirement.
4) What pressure and temperature can the Nibco S-413-B swing check handle?
200 psi (13.8 bar) non-shock cold working pressure, and 125 psi (8.6 bar) saturated steam up to 353 F (178 C). That is a Class 125 rating, which covers most commercial hydronic heating and low pressure steam work. It conforms to MSS SP-80.
5) Can this check valve be serviced in the line, or do I have to cut it out?
It is serviceable. The S-413-B uses a screw-in bonnet, so the bonnet backs out to reach the internals without disturbing the soldered joints. The bronze disc is renewable and the seat is regrindable, which is why maintenance crews spec this style on systems they expect to rebuild rather than replace.
6) What copper pipe sizes does the Nibco S-413-B come in?
Eight solder sizes: 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. Common MPNs are NJ73006 for 1/2 inch, NJ73008 for 3/4 inch and NJ7300A for 1 inch. Two inch (NJ7300D) is the largest body in the S-413-B line.
7) Is the disc in the Nibco S-413-B bronze or rubber?
Bronze on bronze. The trim package is a bronze disc seating against a bronze seat, with a bronze body throughout. Metal to metal seating holds up to steam and higher temperature service where an elastomer disc would degrade, but it will not seal as tightly as a soft seat on a low pressure, low flow line.
8) Swing check or Y-pattern lift check, which do I need for a horizontal pump discharge?
The S-413-B is a Y-pattern swing check, and a swing disc is the usual choice on horizontal runs because it opens fully and keeps pressure drop low at normal flow. Lift checks tend to be picked where flow is low or pulsating. Just remember the swing disc needs gravity on its side, so keep it horizontal or with flow going up.
9) Any precautions soldering a bronze check valve into a copper line?
Heat is the concern. With a screw-in bonnet design you can back the bonnet out and pull the disc before you sweat the joints, which keeps torch heat off the seating surfaces, then reassemble once the body cools. The seat is regrindable if it does get scored, but it is easier to protect it up front.
