The NIBCO® check valve features a screw-in bonnet for accessibility to repair or replace parts. Swing check valves may be installed in horizontal positions (or vertical with flow moving up). Please refer to NIBCO technical data sheets, chemical resistance guides and catalogs for engineering and installation information. Choose NIBCO® check valves for the most specified, versatile and economical valve option in commercial, mechanical and industrial applications. NIBCO® check valves are backed by the NIBCO 5-year 125% limited warranty.

Nibco NJ7400A – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can the Nibco S-413-Y bronze swing check valve be installed vertically?
Only in a vertical run where flow moves upward. The S-413-Y is a swing check, so the disc relies on gravity and flow to seat. Horizontal installation is fine; vertical with downward flow is not, because the disc will not close against the flow direction.
2) Is the Nibco S-413-Y check valve approved for potable drinking water?
No. Use of the S-413-Y in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. It is intended for non-potable service such as hydronic heating, steam, and mechanical or industrial piping. For potable water you need a lead-free bronze check valve.
3) What are the pressure and temperature limits on the Nibco S-413-Y bronze check valve?
200 psi (13.8 bar) non-shock cold working pressure, and 125 psi (8.6 bar) saturated steam up to 353 degrees F (178 degrees C). That steam rating is what makes it a Class 125 valve and suits it to low pressure steam and condensate as well as hydronic water lines.
4) How does the S-413-Y connect to copper pipe, and do I need adapters?
It has female solder cups on both ends, sized Class 125, so it sweats directly onto copper tube of the matching nominal size. No adapters or unions needed. If your line is threaded iron pipe, this is the wrong end connection and you want a threaded bronze check instead.
5) Can this check valve be repaired in place instead of cut out and replaced?
Yes, and that is the point of the design. The S-413-Y uses a screw-in bonnet, so the bonnet backs out for access to the internals. The PTFE disc is renewable and the seat is regrindable, so a valve that starts weeping can be serviced rather than desoldered off the line.
6) What pipe sizes does the Nibco S-413-Y swing check valve come in?
Eight sizes, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. Order by size using the part number: 1/2 inch is NJ74006, 3/4 inch is NJ74008, 1 inch is NJ7400A, and 2 inch is NJ7400D.
7) What is a Y-pattern swing check and when should I use one instead of a standard swing check body?
The S-413-Y is a Y-pattern bronze swing check, meaning the bonnet sits at an angle to the run rather than straight up. That angled bonnet gives you room to pull the disc for service in tight mechanical rooms, and it keeps the flow path straighter than a straight-through swing body. If the line runs vertically downward or sees pulsating flow, a swing check of any pattern is the wrong choice; go to a spring-loaded or silent check.
8) Why a PTFE disc rather than bronze or composition on this Nibco check valve?
The PTFE disc gives the S-413-Y a soft seat that seals tight at low differential pressure and stands up to the 353 degree F steam rating. PTFE is also chemically broad, which is why Nibco points you to their chemical resistance guide for anything beyond water and steam. The disc is replaceable, so the seal material is a wear part, not a throwaway.
9) Does the Nibco S-413-Y meet a recognized valve standard for spec work?
It conforms to MSS SP-139, the standard covering copper alloy swing check valves. Body is bronze with Class 125 solder ends, which is what most commercial mechanical schedules call out for hydronic and low pressure steam branch lines.
10) Will soldering this valve into the line damage the PTFE disc?
Heat is the thing to watch. The S-413-Y's PTFE disc sits inside the body, so on the smaller sizes especially, back the screw-in bonnet out and remove the disc before you sweat the joints, then reassemble once the body has cooled. Nibco's Bronze Swing Check IOM manual covers the procedure.
