1) Can a Nibco S-413-Y-LF swing check valve be installed in a vertical pipe run?
Only if the flow is moving up. The S-413-Y-LF is a swing check, so the disc relies on flow and gravity to seat. It installs in horizontal runs, or vertical runs with upward flow. Vertical down-flow will not hold it closed properly, so pick a different check style for a downward leg.
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco S-413-Y-LF check valve come in?
Six sizes, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch, all with female solder cups. The order numbers run NJ740X6 for 1/2 inch, NJ740X8 for 3/4, NJ740XA for 1, NJ740XB for 1-1/4, NJ740XC for 1-1/2 and NJ740XD for 2 inch. Size to the line, not to the fitting you happen to have on the truck; an oversized swing check chatters at low flow.
3) Is the Nibco S-413-Y-LF approved for potable drinking water?
Yes. The S-413-Y-LF carries NSF/ANSI/CAN-61 and 372 and is a lead-free bronze body with the NIBCO double-oval lead-free marking cast in, which is what an inspector looks for on a potable line. That marking also matters on a jobsite where somebody has to prove compliance months after the wall closed up.
4) How do I connect a Nibco S-413-Y-LF check valve, does it thread on?
It does not thread. The S-413-Y-LF has Class 125 female solder cups on both ends, so it sweats onto copper tube. You will need a copper stub on each side and enough clearance to get heat on the joint. If your line is threaded iron or you want a valve you can break out later, a solder-end valve is the wrong choice and you want a threaded or union-end check instead.
5) Can the seat and disc in a Nibco S-413-Y-LF be replaced without cutting the valve out of the line?
Yes, and that is the point of the Y-pattern body. The S-413-Y-LF uses a screw-in bonnet, and the seat and disc are renewable and of the regrinding type. Back the bonnet out and you can regrind the seat or swap the disc with the body still soldered in place. On an MRO account standardizing a building, that turns a check valve failure into a service call rather than a pipe repair.
6) Will a Nibco S-413-Y-LF drop into the same space as the bronze swing check I am replacing?
Dimensions and workmanship on the S-413-Y-LF conform to MSS SP-80, which is the standard that governs bronze gate, globe, angle and check valves. If the valve coming out is another MSS SP-80 Class 125 solder-end bronze swing check of the same pipe size, the face-to-face and cup depth follow the same standard, so the takeout matches. If the old valve was threaded, or a non-standard specialty check, measure before you cut.
7) What is the pressure rating on the Nibco S-413-Y-LF bronze check valve?
200 psi (13.8 bar) non-shock cold working pressure. That covers ordinary domestic water and booster-pumped risers in a mid-rise. It is a cold working pressure number, so it is not a steam rating, and non-shock means it does not account for water hammer, which is exactly what a check valve on a pump discharge sees. Arrest the hammer upstream.
8) Is a PTFE disc check valve OK for hot water recirculation?
PTFE is the disc material in the S-413-Y-LF, and it is the soft-seat option Nibco pairs with bronze swing checks where a tight shutoff matters more than a metal-to-metal seat. It stands up to domestic hot water better than a rubber or composition disc. For anything chemically aggressive, check the fluid against Nibco's chemical resistance guide before committing, since the disc is the part that sees it first.
9) Swing check or spring check for a domestic water line?
A swing check like the S-413-Y-LF has a hinged disc that flow pushes open, so it adds very little pressure drop, which is why it is the default on gravity and low-head domestic water. It needs flow direction and orientation respected: horizontal, or vertical with flow up. A spring-loaded or silent check is what you reach for when the line runs vertically downward, when the valve sits on a pump discharge that slams, or when the pipe can see reverse flow before gravity closes the disc.
10) Does anything need to come out of the Nibco S-413-Y-LF before soldering it in?
The screw-in bonnet on the S-413-Y-LF comes off, and taking it off before you sweat the joints keeps torch heat away from the PTFE disc. Solder the body, let it cool, then reassemble. Heating a soft-seat check valve fully assembled is the most common way one gets installed already leaking by.
