1) Can a Nibco T-413-Y bronze swing check valve be installed in a vertical pipe run?
Yes, but only where flow moves upward. The T-413-Y is a swing check, so the disc relies on gravity and flow direction to seat. Horizontal runs are fine; vertical runs work with flow going up. Install it in a vertical downflow leg and it won't seat properly.
2) Is the Nibco T-413-Y check valve approved for potable drinking water?
No. Use of the T-413-Y in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. It is a bronze valve intended for commercial, mechanical and industrial service such as heating, steam and process lines. For a domestic water line, you need a lead-free rated check valve instead.
3) How does the Nibco T-413-Y check valve connect to pipe, and what sizes does it come in?
Threaded, female NPT (FIPT) on both ends, Class 125. It threads directly onto male-threaded steel or brass pipe nipples, no soldering. Sizes run 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. If you're on copper tube, you'll need adapters, or a solder-end check valve instead.
4) What pressure and temperature can the Nibco T-413-Y bronze check valve handle?
200 psi / 13.8 bar non-shock cold working pressure, and 125 psi / 8.6 bar saturated steam up to 353 degrees F / 178 degrees C. That covers typical hydronic heating, low-pressure steam and condensate return work. Above those numbers you're into a higher class valve.
5) Can a Nibco T-413-Y swing check valve be repaired in place instead of replaced?
It's built for it. The T-413-Y uses a screw-in bonnet, so the bonnet backs out and gives access to the internals without cutting the valve out of the line. The PTFE disc is renewable and the seat is regrindable, which is why these get specified in mechanical rooms where a maintenance crew services valves rather than swapping them.
6) What is the difference between a Y-pattern swing check and a standard swing check valve?
The T-413-Y is a Y-pattern body, meaning the bonnet and seat sit on an angled axis off the flow path rather than straight on top. That gives the disc a shorter, straighter swing and keeps the seat accessible through the bonnet. Functionally it still does what any swing check does: passes flow one way, closes on reverse flow. Choose a swing check like this for lines with steady flow in one direction; a spring-loaded lift or silent check is the better call where you need fast closure against pump surge or where the valve must sit in a vertical downflow leg.
7) Does the Nibco T-413-Y check valve meet MSS SP-139?
Yes, the T-413-Y conforms to MSS SP-139, the standard covering copper alloy check valves for low pressure service. That is the compliance reference to cite on a submittal for this valve.
8) Which Nibco part number do I order for a 1 inch or 1-1/2 inch T-413-Y check valve?

9) Can I use a bronze swing check valve on a low pressure steam or condensate return line?
Yes. The T-413-Y is rated 125 psi saturated steam to 353 degrees F, with a PTFE disc and a bronze body, which is the usual combination for low pressure steam and condensate service. Mount it horizontal, or vertical with flow up. On condensate lines watch the orientation, since a swing check in a downflow leg will not seat.
10) Why does the Nibco T-413-Y use a PTFE disc instead of a bronze or composition disc?
PTFE is the trim on this valve, and it's what lets it run on saturated steam to 353 degrees F while still sealing tight at low differential pressures. It also resists a wider range of process media than rubber or composition discs. The disc is renewable, so when it eventually wears you replace the disc rather than the valve.
11) Do I need a union or extra fittings to install a threaded Nibco T-413-Y check valve?
Nothing ships with the valve beyond the valve itself. Both ends are female NPT, so you thread onto male pipe. Because the body is threaded on both sides, plan a union on one side if you ever want to pull the valve without breaking down the run. Pipe dope or PTFE tape and the correct male threads are all that's otherwise required.
