1) Can the Nibco T-480-Y check valve be installed in a vertical pipe run?
The T-480-Y Ring Check works in horizontal runs and in vertical runs where flow is moving up. Don't put it in a vertical drop with flow moving down. It's a spring actuated in-line lift check, so the spring closes the disc against reverse flow regardless of gravity, which is why the up-flow vertical orientation is allowed at all.
2) Is the Nibco T-480-Y bronze check valve approved for potable water?
No. The T-480-Y is prohibited from use in U.S. drinking water applications after January 3, 2014. Use it on non-potable service such as heating hot water, chilled water, compressed air, or process lines, and specify a lead-free bronze check valve for anything feeding a drinking water system.
3) What pressure and temperature can the Nibco T-480-Y check valve handle?
200 psi (14 bar) non-shock cold working pressure, and 125 psi (8.6 bar) saturated steam to 353 degrees F (178 degrees C). That steam rating is what lets it go on low pressure steam and condensate work as well as hydronic lines.
4) What pipe sizes does the Nibco T-480-Y Ring Check come in?
Seven sizes, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. All of them take Class 125 female NPT threaded ends, so you thread the valve straight onto male-threaded pipe or onto adapters off copper or PEX.
5) How much pressure does it take to open a Nibco T-480-Y spring check valve?
Cracking pressure is 1/2 psi. That's low enough for gravity and low-head circulator loops, but it is still a pressure drop the pump has to overcome, so count it when you're sizing a system with several checks in series.
6) Will a Nibco T-480-Y check valve seal tight on a low flow line?
The disc seat is PTFE, a resilient soft seat rather than metal to metal, so it seals on low differential and tolerates a bit of scale or debris on the seating surface better than a hard-seated check. Body and trim are bronze. PTFE also handles the 353 degree F steam rating.
7) Should I use an in-line spring check or a swing check valve?
An in-line lift check like the T-480-Y is the one to use when the valve has to sit in a vertical up-flow riser or where you want fast, quiet closure before the flow reverses, since the spring shuts the disc rather than waiting on backflow. A swing check only works reliably horizontal or vertical up and slams harder on reversal, but it costs you less pressure drop because there's no spring to push open. On pump discharge and tight mechanical room piping, the spring check is usually the right call.
8) Does the Nibco T-480-Y check valve meet MSS SP-80?
Yes, the T-480-Y conforms to MSS SP-80, the standard covering bronze gate, globe, angle and check valves. That is the citation a spec writer or mechanical inspector is usually looking for on a bronze check.
9) Can the Nibco T-480-Y Ring Check valve be serviced without cutting it out of the line?
It has a screw-in bonnet, so the bonnet unthreads from the body to reach the disc and spring. That said, the valve itself is threaded into the pipe, so you still need unions or enough pipe movement to break it loose if the body has to come out. Plan a union on at least one side when you install it.
10) What is the Nibco part number for a 1 inch T-480-Y check valve?
