1) Can the Nibco T-433-Y bronze check valve be installed in a vertical line?
Yes, as long as flow is moving upward. The T-433-Y is a swing check, so gravity and flow have to work with the disc. Horizontal runs are the other approved position. Install it in a vertical drop with flow moving down and it won't seat properly.
2) What pipe connection does the Nibco T-433-Y check valve use, and what sizes are available?
Female NPT threaded ends (FIPT), Class 150 threaded connections, so it screws straight onto threaded steel or brass pipe with no soldering. Sizes run 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2 and 3 inch. If you're on copper tube, you'd need adapters or a solder-end version instead.
3) Is the Nibco T-433-Y rated for steam service?
Yes. It carries 150 psi / 10.3 bar saturated steam working pressure to 366 F / 185 C, and 300 psi / 20.7 bar non-shock cold working pressure. That covers typical low pressure steam and condensate returns as well as cold water, oil and air lines within those limits.
4) Can I use the Nibco T-433-Y check valve on potable drinking water?
No. Use of this valve in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. It is a non-lead-free bronze body intended for mechanical, commercial and industrial service such as steam, condensate, hydronic heating and process lines. For potable water you need a certified lead-free check valve.
5) What is the difference between a Y-pattern swing check like the T-433-Y and a standard horizontal swing check?
The Y-pattern body angles the seat and bonnet off the run, which gives a straighter flow path and puts the disc and seat where you can get at them. The T-433-Y uses a screw-in bonnet, so the whole trim comes out in line without cutting the valve out of the pipe. A conventional straight-body swing check is more compact, but you give up that servicing access.
6) Can the seat and disc on the Nibco T-433-Y be serviced instead of replacing the valve?
Yes, and that's the main reason to spec it. The PTFE disc is renewable and the seat is regrindable, so a valve that starts weeping can be rebuilt in place rather than cut out. The screw-in bonnet is what gives you access to the trim.
7) Does the Nibco T-433-Y meet MSS SP-80 for bronze valves?
Yes, the T-433-Y conforms to MSS SP-80, the standard covering bronze gate, globe, angle and check valves. That's the line most mechanical specs cite for bronze check valves, so it will satisfy a drawing calling for an MSS SP-80 Class 150 threaded bronze swing check.
8) Why choose a PTFE disc check valve over a bronze or composition disc?
PTFE gives a soft seat that seals tight at lower differential pressures and handles the 366 F steam rating on this valve. A metal disc tolerates abrasive or hotter service but usually needs more back pressure to shut off cleanly. On the T-433-Y the PTFE disc is the seat seal material and it's replaceable.
