Nibco NL7J00A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Nibco T-433-B swing check valve be installed vertically?
The T-433-B bronze swing check installs in horizontal runs, or vertically only when flow moves upward. A swing disc relies on gravity and flow to seat, so mounting it in a downward-flow vertical leg will not let it close properly.
2) Is the Nibco T-433-B check valve approved for potable water?
No. Use of the T-433-B in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. It is intended for non-potable commercial, mechanical and industrial service such as heating, steam and process lines. For potable water you need a lead-free bronze check valve.
3) What pipe do the T-433-B threaded ends connect to?
Both ends are female NPT (FIPT) threads to Class 150, so they take standard male NPT pipe nipples or threaded adapters. No soldering is involved, which makes it a straightforward swap into an existing threaded line.
4) What pressure and temperature is the Nibco T-433-B bronze check valve rated for?
300 psi / 20.7 bar non-shock cold working pressure, and 150 psi / 10.3 bar saturated steam up to 366 F / 185 C. That steam rating is what makes it usable on low pressure steam and condensate as well as water and air service.
5) What sizes does the Nibco T-433-B come in?
Eight threaded sizes: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2 and 3 inch. Part numbers run NL7J006 for the 1/2 inch through NL7J00F for the 3 inch, so one model covers branch lines up to 3 inch mains.
6) Can the disc and seat on this bronze swing check be serviced instead of replacing the valve?
Yes. The T-433-B uses a renewable bronze disc and a regrindable seat, reached through a screw-in bonnet. For an MRO shop that means a leaking check can often be rebuilt in place rather than cut out and repiped.
7) Does the Nibco T-433-B meet the MSS SP-80 spec called out on my drawing?
It conforms to MSS SP-80, the standard for bronze gate, globe, angle and check valves, and it is a Class 150 threaded end configuration. That is the spec line most mechanical drawings cite for bronze checks.
8) Should I use a bronze swing check or a spring-loaded silent check valve?
The T-433-B is a Y-pattern swing check with a bronze disc, which gives low pressure drop and handles horizontal lines and upward vertical flow. A swing disc can slam on fast-closing or pulsating systems such as pump discharge with a check valve return; a spring-assisted silent or lift check is the better choice there. For general gravity, steam and process lines a swing check is the simpler, lower-restriction option.
9) Are the disc and seat on the T-433-B metal, or is there a soft seal that limits temperature?
Metal to metal. Both the body material and the seat seal are bronze, with a bronze disc, so there is no elastomer or PTFE seat to set a lower temperature ceiling. That is why the valve carries a 366 F saturated steam rating.
