Nibco T-480 Check Valve - Ring Check®, Bronze, Resilient Disc, Thread Ends

Both work, with one condition: horizontal runs are fine, and vertical is fine only when flow moves up through the valve. The T-480 is a spring actuated in-line lift check, so the spring closes the disc against reverse flow regardless of orientation, but a vertical down-flow installation is not an approved position for it. On a pump discharge riser, that means it goes in the upward leg.

No. The T-480 Ring Check is prohibited from use in U.S. drinking water applications after January 3, 2014. Put it on non-potable duty, hydronic heating loops, chilled water, condenser water, compressed air or process lines. For a domestic hot or cold water line feeding fixtures, you need a lead-free bronze check valve instead.

Six sizes, 1/2 inch through 2 inch: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. Every one has female NPT threaded ends (FIPT), so it threads straight onto male-threaded pipe, nipples or adapters with no soldering and no flange kit. That is what makes it a drop-in on an existing threaded line, since you only need to break the union and thread the valve in.

200 PSI / 13.8 bar non-shock cold working pressure, and 250 PSI / 17.2 bar WWP. Maximum temperature is 180 F (82.2 C). The 180 F ceiling is the number that usually decides it: that covers ordinary hydronic heating and condenser water, but it rules the T-480 out of steam and out of any high temperature hot water loop running above 180 F.

An in-line lift check like the T-480 carries a spring that pushes the disc shut, so it closes before reverse flow builds and it works in a vertical up-flow riser as well as horizontal. A swing check relies on gravity and backflow to close, which makes it slower to seat and more prone to slam on a pump that cycles. The trade is pressure drop: the spring and the in-line body cost you more head than a swing check does. Pick the spring check where you want quiet, fast closure or a vertical run; pick a swing check where minimising pressure loss on a horizontal line matters more.

The resilient disc is Buna-N nitrile rubber, which is the standard elastomer for water, glycol mixes and oil service, and it gives a tighter shutoff at low pressure than a metal-to-metal seat. It is not the right seat for hot water above the valve's 180 F limit, and it is not the choice for oxidising chemicals. Check the Nibco chemical resistance data for anything beyond plain water or glycol.

The T-480 uses a screw-in bonnet, so the bonnet backs out and gives access to the spring and Buna disc without cutting the valve out of the line. On a threaded install that matters, because a valve that weeps by can often be serviced in place rather than pulled. Bronze body throughout, and the alloy is dezincification resistant, which is what keeps the threads and body from going porous on aggressive or softened water.

Order by pipe size: 3/4 inch is NL93088 and 1 inch is NL9308A. The rest of the range runs NL93086 for 1/2 inch, NL9308B for 1-1/4 inch, NL9308C for 1-1/2 inch and NL9308D for 2 inch. Size is the only thing to specify on the T-480, there is no finish, trim or end connection option to choose, since all six are FIPT threaded bronze with the Buna disc.

No solder, no torch. The T-480 has female NPT threads on both ends, so it goes in with pipe dope or PTFE tape and two wrenches. That also means the Buna-N disc is never exposed to torch heat during install, which is the usual failure on a soldered resilient-seat check. If your line is copper, use male adapters or a threaded union at the valve so it can come back out later.

The T-480 is rated for residential plumbing service and the range starts at 1/2 inch, which covers a small circulator or booster branch. Size the valve to the pipe, not to the pump: an undersized in-line check adds head loss and can chatter. For a 1 inch branch use the 1 inch NL9308A rather than bushing down to the 1/2 inch body. Remember the potable restriction, so this is for a heating or non-potable circuit, not the domestic water feed.
