1) Can the Nibco S-433-B swing check valve be installed vertically, or does it have to run horizontal?
Horizontal is the standard orientation for the S-433-B bronze swing check. It can go vertical only when flow moves upward through the valve, because the disc swings shut on gravity and reverse flow. Mounted vertical with downward flow it will not seat and will not stop backflow.
2) What size copper pipe does the Nibco S-433-B solder check valve connect to?
It is made in 2-1/2 inch and 3 inch, ordered as MPN NJ7J00E and NJ7J00F respectively. The ends are female solder cups, so they slip over Type K, L or M copper tube of the matching nominal size and are sweated in place. No threading or union is involved.
3) Can I use this Nibco bronze check valve on a domestic water line?
No. Use in U.S. drinking water applications has been prohibited since January 3, 2014, because this bronze body is not a lead-free alloy. Keep the S-433-B on non-potable duty such as hydronic heating, chilled water, condenser water, compressed air or industrial process lines. For potable service you need a certified lead-free bronze check valve instead.
4) Can this check valve be repaired in place, or is it a throwaway when the disc wears?
It is serviceable. The valve uses a screw-in bonnet, a renewable bronze disc and a regrindable seat, so a maintenance tech can open the bonnet, swap the disc or dress the seat, and put the same body back in service. That matters on a soldered valve, where replacing the whole body means cutting pipe and re-sweating two joints.
5) What pressure and temperature is the Nibco S-433-B check valve rated for?
300 psi (20.7 bar) non-shock cold working pressure, and 150 psi (10.3 bar) saturated steam up to 366 F (185 C). That covers typical low pressure steam and condensate return work as well as high head pumped water systems. The ends are Class 150 solder connections.
6) Is the Nibco S-433-B built to a recognized valve standard for spec work?
It conforms to MSS SP-80, the standard covering bronze gate, globe, angle and check valves, which is the reference most mechanical specs call out for bronze check valves. Body, disc and seat are all bronze.
7) Should I pick a swing check like the S-433-B or a spring-loaded silent check?
A Y-pattern swing check like the S-433-B has a low pressure drop and closes on gravity plus reverse flow, which suits pumped water and low pressure steam runs where head loss matters. Its limit is that it must sit horizontal (or vertical with flow up) and it can slam on fast reverse flow. A spring-loaded silent or lift check closes before flow reverses and can be mounted in either orientation, at the cost of higher pressure drop. Pick the swing where friction loss is the concern, the silent check where water hammer is.
8) Any special care needed when soldering a bronze check valve into a copper line?
Yes, heat is the risk. The S-433-B has a screw-in bonnet, so back the bonnet off and pull the disc assembly before you sweat the female solder cups, then reassemble once the joints cool. Sweating with the internals in place can cook the seating surfaces. Also confirm flow direction against the body arrow before you commit the joints, since a soldered valve cannot be spun around afterward.
