Nibco NJ7K00F – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can a Nibco S-433-Y bronze swing check valve be mounted vertically?
Only in a vertical run where flow is moving up. Swing checks like the S-433-Y rely on gravity and flow to seat the disc, so the acceptable positions are horizontal, or vertical with upward flow. Mount it in a downward-flow leg and it won't check properly.
2) What kind of pipe connection does the Nibco S-433-Y check valve use, and do I need adapters?
It has female solder cups on both ends, Class 150 solder end connections, so it sweats directly onto copper tube. No threading, no unions, no adapters needed if you're running copper. If your line is threaded iron or PEX you'll need a transition fitting, or a threaded-end check valve instead.
3) Is the Nibco S-433-Y check valve OK for potable water?
No. Use in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. This is a bronze valve for commercial, mechanical and industrial service, hydronic heating, condenser and steam lines. For potable water you need a lead-free rated check valve.
4) Can the Nibco S-433-Y check valve be serviced in line, or does it have to be cut out when it leaks by?
It's built to be repaired rather than replaced. The bonnet comes off, the PTFE disc is renewable, and the seat is regrindable, so a valve that's passing can usually be brought back without cutting the solder joints out of the line. That's the practical argument for a bronze bolted-style check over a throwaway unit in a mechanical room.
5) What pressure and temperature can the Nibco S-433-Y bronze swing check handle?
300 psi (20.7 bar) non-shock cold working pressure, and 150 psi (10.3 bar) saturated steam up to 366 degrees F (185 degrees C). That steam rating is what makes it usable on low-pressure steam and condensate return as well as chilled and hot water lines.
6) Does the Nibco S-433-Y meet the check valve spec on my mechanical drawings?
It conforms to MSS SP-80, the standard commonly called out for bronze gate, globe and check valves on commercial mechanical specs. Body is bronze, trim is a PTFE disc, and it is a Class 150 solder end swing check rated 300 psi CWP.
7) Swing check or spring check for a pump discharge line?
A swing check such as the S-433-Y has a hinged disc that opens with flow and drops closed, which gives low pressure drop but needs either horizontal mounting or upward vertical flow to work. Spring-loaded or silent checks close faster and can be mounted in any orientation, which is what you want where water hammer on pump shutdown is a concern. For general horizontal hydronic and steam service where flow is steady, the swing check is the lower-restriction choice.
8) What size is the Nibco S-433-Y check valve, and what part number do I order?
It's a 3 inch bronze swing check, manufacturer part number NJ7K00F, with 3 inch female solder cups on both ends. Make sure your copper is nominal 3 inch tube, not 3 inch IPS iron, before you buy it.
9) Any soldering precautions when installing a bronze check valve with a PTFE disc?
Heat is the thing to watch. The disc and seat seal are PTFE and the ends are solder cups, so excessive torch time on the joint can damage the internal trim. The bonnet is a screw-in design, so the usual practice is to back the bonnet out and pull the disc before sweating the valve in, then reassemble once the joints have cooled. Nibco's bronze swing check IOM manual covers the full procedure.
10) Will the PTFE disc in the Nibco S-433-Y hold up on a steam line?
The disc and seat seal are PTFE, which is what allows the 150 psi saturated steam rating up to 366 degrees F. It also gives a tighter shutoff on cold water than a metal-to-metal seat. If the disc ever chews up, it is a renewable part rather than a scrap-the-valve situation.
