Nibco NF7400A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Nibco PF-413-Y press check valve be used on potable drinking water lines?
No. The PF-413-Y is prohibited from use in U.S. drinking water applications after January 3, 2014. It is intended for commercial and residential plumbing service lines that are not potable, plus heating, HVAC, industrial, irrigation and automatic sprinkler systems. For potable water you need a valve that meets the current lead-free requirement.
2) Does the PF-413-Y have to be installed horizontally, or can it go in a vertical riser?
It is a horizontal swing check. The disc swings on a hinge and relies on gravity plus flow to seat, so install it in a horizontal run with the bonnet up, and keep the flow arrow pointed downstream. If your only location is a vertical riser, use a spring-loaded or lift-type check instead of this Y-pattern swing body.
3) Do I need a special tool to install the Nibco PF-413-Y, or can I solder it?
This is a press-end valve, not a solder-end valve. Both ends are female press sockets and they are crimped with a press tool and the matching jaw or chain for the size. Nothing is soldered, so there is no torch work and no need to disassemble the valve to protect the seat. After a proper crimp an 'N' witness mark shows on the fitting, which is your visual confirmation the joint was pressed.
4) What pipe sizes does the Nibco PF-413-Y bronze swing check valve come in?
Six sizes, all press x press: 1/2 inch (NF74006), 3/4 inch (NF74008), 1 inch (NF7400A), 1-1/4 inch (NF7400B), 1-1/2 inch (NF7400C) and 2 inch (NF7400D). Each accepts copper tube of the matching nominal size into a female press socket at both ends.
5) What pressure and temperature can the PF-413-Y bronze check valve handle?
200 psi (13.8 bar) non-shock cold working pressure, with a maximum service temperature of 250 degrees F. That covers typical hydronic heating and chilled water loops as well as standard commercial plumbing pressures. It is not a steam valve.
6) Can the seat and disc be replaced without cutting the valve out of the line?
Yes, that is the point of the Y-pattern regrinding design. The PF-413-Y has a renewable seat and disc, so the bonnet comes off and the seating surfaces can be reground or the disc replaced rather than scrapping the valve. The seat disc is PTFE. On a press-connected valve that matters more than usual, since you cannot unsweat it to service it.
7) Does the Nibco PF-413-Y meet a valve standard I can put on a submittal?
It conforms to MSS SP-80, the standard covering bronze gate, globe, angle and check valves, and it is rated 200 psi non-shock CWP. Those two figures plus the bronze body and PTFE seat are normally what a mechanical submittal for a bronze check valve asks for.
8) Should I use a Y-pattern swing check like the PF-413-Y or an inline spring check?
A Y-pattern swing check gives a straighter, lower-restriction flow path and, on the PF-413-Y, a seat and disc you can renew in place, which suits pumped hydronic and larger service lines up to 2 inch. A spring check is the choice where the valve must sit vertically, where flow reverses quickly and you want faster closing to limit slam, or where orientation is uncertain. This one is horizontal-mount only.
9) Will a bronze Nibco press check valve hold up in a closed hydronic loop with aggressive water?
The body is bronze and the valve is dezincification resistant, which is what you want where water chemistry attacks the zinc in ordinary brass alloys and leaves a porous body behind. Rated use includes heating, HVAC, industrial and irrigation service.
