Nibco NF4K00A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Nibco PF-311-Y press angle valve on a potable water line?
No. The PF-311-Y bronze angle valve is prohibited from use in U.S. drinking water applications after January 3, 2014. It is built for the non-potable side of a building: automatic sprinkler systems, commercial plumbing, heating, HVAC, industrial, irrigation and residential plumbing lines that are not drinking water. For a potable branch you need a valve carrying a lead-free potable designation instead.
2) What pipe does the Nibco PF-311-Y angle valve connect to, and do I need to solder it?
No soldering. Both ends are female press, so the valve slides over copper tube and is crimped with a press tool and the matching jaw. When the crimp is made correctly a raised "N" witness mark shows on the fitting, which is your visual confirmation the joint was pressed and not just pushed on. No torch, no flux, no threading either end.
3) Will a Nibco PF-311-Y angle valve hold up on a hydronic heating loop?
Yes, within 200 psi non-shock cold working pressure and 250 degrees F maximum service temperature. That covers ordinary hot water heating and HVAC service. Steam is a different animal, and this valve is rated on cold working pressure, so a heating loop running under those two limits is what it is built for.
4) Can the seat and disc be replaced without pulling the valve out of the line?
The seat and disc on the PF-311-Y are renewable, and the bonnet is a screw-in type, so the working parts come out from the top rather than requiring the body be cut out. That matters on a press valve in particular: the body is crimped permanently onto the tube, so serviceability from the bonnet is the only way to keep it in service long term. The seat and disc are PTFE.
5) Does the Nibco PF-311-Y meet the MSS SP-80 spec on my drawing?
Yes, the PF-311-Y bronze angle valve conforms to MSS SP-80, the standard for bronze gate, globe, angle and check valves. If the submittal calls out MSS SP-80 with a 200 psi CWP bronze angle valve, this matches on both counts.
6) What sizes does the Nibco PF-311-Y press angle valve come in?
Six copper tube sizes: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. Order by part number, NF4K006 for 1/2 inch, NF4K008 for 3/4, NF4K00A for 1 inch, NF4K00B for 1-1/4, NF4K00C for 1-1/2 and NF4K00D for 2 inch. Every size takes press ends on both sides, so your jaw set has to cover the size you are running.
7) Angle valve or a straight globe valve, which do I want here?
An angle valve like the PF-311-Y turns the flow 90 degrees through the valve body itself, so it does the work of a valve plus an elbow. Use it where the line changes direction at the shutoff point, at a riser takeoff or a wall penetration, and you save a fitting and a joint. If the run stays straight through the shutoff, a straight-pattern globe or ball valve is the right call instead.
8) Can I press a Nibco PF-311-Y angle valve into a sprinkler system?
Sprinkler service is one of the listed applications for this valve, alongside industrial and commercial plumbing. Confirm the 200 psi cold working pressure and 250 degrees F ceiling cover your system, and confirm your authority having jurisdiction accepts the press joint on that particular fire protection system, since acceptance for sprinkler work is set locally and not by the valve.
9) Do I need special tools to install a Nibco press valve, or will my regular ProPress tool work?
A press angle valve needs a press tool with jaws or chains sized to the tube you are joining, 1/2 through 2 inch on the PF-311-Y. Nibco supplies pressing tools, jaws and chains as part of the Press System alongside the fittings and valves. There is no soldering step, so the joint goes together wet and the line can be charged as soon as the crimp is verified by the "N" mark.
10) Is the Nibco PF-311-Y valve dezincification resistant?
Yes. The bronze body is dezincification resistant, which is what keeps the alloy from leaching zinc and going porous in aggressive or high-chloride water. On irrigation lines and closed loops with questionable make-up water, that is the failure mode that takes out ordinary brass valves.
