Nibco NL4K00A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Nibco T-311-Y angle valve thread onto my existing NPT pipe, or do I need an adapter?
Both ends are female NPT (FIPT) threaded, so the T-311-Y screws directly onto male-threaded pipe nipples in the matching size. No soldering, no unions, no adapters as long as your pipe is threaded. It runs from 1/4 inch up through 3 inch, in 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2 and 3 inch. If your line is copper tube prepped for solder, this is the wrong end connection for it.
2) Can I use a Nibco T-311-Y bronze angle valve on potable water?
No. Use of the T-311-Y in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. It is built for commercial and industrial service, hot and cold water systems that are not potable, HVAC, steam, compressed air, gas and general utility lines. For a domestic water riser or a fixture supply in an occupied building, specify a lead-free valve instead.
3) What pressure and steam rating does the Nibco T-311-Y angle valve carry?
200 psi (13.8 bar) non-shock cold working pressure, and 125 psi (8.6 bar) saturated steam to 353 degrees F (178 degrees C). That is the Class 125 rating, so it covers low pressure steam mains, condensate service and standard commercial hydronic loops. If your system design pressure exceeds 200 psi cold or the steam header runs above 125 psi, step up to a Class 150 bronze valve.
4) Does the Nibco T-311-Y meet the MSS SP-80 spec called out on my drawing?
Yes, the T-311-Y bronze angle valve conforms to MSS SP-80, the standard for bronze gate, globe, angle and check valves. Paired with the Class 125 rating (200 psi CWP, 125 psi saturated steam), that is normally enough to close out a submittal calling for a Class 125 bronze angle valve with threaded ends and PTFE trim.
5) Is the seat on the Nibco T-311-Y bronze angle valve serviceable, or do I replace the whole valve when it leaks by?
The seat disc is renewable PTFE, and the bonnet is a screw-in design, so a leaking-by valve can be opened and the disc replaced in line rather than cut out. The seat itself is integral to the bronze body. PTFE trim is what lets it take steam service as well as water without the disc cooking off. For a maintenance department standardizing across a plant, that rebuildability is the main reason to spec bronze over a throwaway valve.
6) Will a bronze angle valve hold up in hard or aggressive water without the brass going pink?
The T-311-Y body is bronze and the alloy is dezincification resistant, which is what keeps the zinc from leaching out and leaving porous, weakened metal behind in aggressive or high chloride water. That is a real failure mode on cheaper brass valves in hydronic and cooling loops that get made up with treated water. Bronze also takes the temperature swing of steam and hot water service better than a plastic-bodied valve.
7) What size Nibco T-311-Y do I order, and what is the part number for each?
Order by nominal pipe size, matched to the line it threads into. The T-311-Y runs 1/4 inch (NL4K004), 3/8 inch (NL4K005), 1/2 inch (NL4K006), 3/4 inch (NL4K008), 1 inch (NL4K00A), 1-1/4 inch (NL4K00B), 1-1/2 inch (NL4K00C), 2 inch (NL4K00D) and 3 inch (NL4K00F).
