Nibco NL3400A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Nibco T-235-Y bronze globe valve on potable water?
No. The T-235-Y is prohibited for use in U.S. drinking water applications after January 3, 2014. It's built for commercial plumbing, heating, HVAC and industrial service, so put it on hot and cold non-potable water, HVAC loops, steam, compressed air, gas and general utility lines. For a potable branch you need a lead-free rated bronze valve instead.
2) What pressure and steam rating does the Nibco T-235-Y globe valve carry?
300 psi / 20.7 bar non-shock cold working pressure, and 150 psi / 10.3 bar saturated steam up to 366 F / 185 C. That steam number is what makes it a Class 150 valve and why it gets specified on low-pressure steam and condensate service. If your system runs above 150 psi steam, this is not the valve.
3) How does the T-235-Y connect to pipe, and do I need to solder it?
No soldering. The T-235-Y has Class 150 threaded ends, female NPT (FIPT) on both sides, so it threads directly onto male-threaded pipe or nipples. On copper you'd use adapters. The threaded end is also what lets you break the valve out of the line later without cutting pipe.
4) Can the seat disc on the Nibco T-235-Y be replaced instead of swapping the whole valve?
Yes, and that's a real maintenance argument for it. The PTFE seat disc is renewable, so a valve that starts passing can be rebuilt in place rather than cut out. The union bonnet is what makes that practical: back off the union nut and the bonnet and stem assembly comes out as a unit while the body stays threaded into the line. The body seat is integral, so you're renewing the soft side against a machined bronze seat.
5) Is the Nibco T-235-Y made to a recognized valve standard?
It conforms to MSS SP-80, the standard covering bronze gate, globe, angle and check valves, and it's a Class 150 valve under that standard. That's the line most mechanical specs and submittals call out for bronze globe valves, so it drops into a spec written to MSS SP-80 Class 150 without a substitution request.
6) What pipe sizes does the Nibco T-235-Y bronze globe valve come in?
Eleven sizes, 1/8 inch through 3 inch: 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2 and 3 inch. Part numbers run NL34002 for the 1/8 inch up to NL3400F for the 3 inch, with NL34006 the 1/2 inch and NL3400A the 1 inch, the two sizes most commonly stocked for coil and utility drops.
7) Should I use a globe valve or a ball valve for throttling flow?
Use the globe valve. The T-235-Y is a multi-turn globe design, which is what you want where flow has to be regulated rather than just opened and shut: the disc moves perpendicular to the seat, so partial positions are stable and the seat doesn't get wire-drawn the way a quarter-turn ball seat does. A ball valve is the better pick for pure on/off isolation with minimal pressure drop. Globe valves inherently restrict more flow, so size for that.
8) Does a globe valve have to be installed in a particular flow direction?
Not on this one. The T-235-Y bronze globe valve is rated for bi-directional service, so you aren't hunting for a flow arrow on install. What still matters is orientation: mount it so the stem is accessible for the handwheel turns a globe valve needs, and on steam service so condensate can't sit on the disc.
9) Will a bronze globe valve hold up in a building with aggressive or high-chloride water?
The T-235-Y body is bronze and the alloy is dezincification resistant, which is the failure mode that eats ordinary brass valves in aggressive water: zinc leaches out and the body goes porous and cracks at the threads. If you've been replacing brass valves in a building on a cycle, that's the property to look at.
10) Can I use the T-235-Y on compressed air and gas lines, not just water?
Yes. Rated service covers hot and cold water, HVAC, steam, compressed air, gas and other general utility duty, at 300 psi non-shock cold working pressure. Bi-directional, so it can sit either way in a header. Confirm the media against Nibco's chemical resistance data before you commit it to anything process related.
11) What does the PTFE trim on this Nibco globe valve get me over a bronze or composition disc?
The T-235-Y ships with a PTFE seat trim package, which is what carries the 366 F steam rating and gives a soft seat that shuts tight on slightly dirty water where a metal disc would weep. PTFE also handles a broader chemical range than a composition disc. It's the renewable part, so the trim is what you order when the valve eventually needs a rebuild.
