1) Can the Nibco T-275-Y bronze globe valve be used on a steam line, and at what pressure?
Steam service is what this valve is built around. The T-275-Y is rated 300 psi / 20.7 bar saturated steam, and 600 psi / 41.4 bar non-shock cold working pressure. The description ties that steam rating to 421 F / 216 C. The union bonnet makes it a good pick where the valve has to come apart in place for disc service rather than being cut out of the line.
2) Is the Nibco T-275-Y globe valve legal for potable drinking water?
No. Use of the T-275-Y in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014. It is a bronze valve intended for commercial plumbing, heating, HVAC and industrial service, not potable lines. For domestic water you need a lead-free valve instead.
3) How does the Nibco T-275-Y connect to the pipe, and do I need to solder it?
No soldering. The T-275-Y has female NPT threaded ends (FIPT), Class 300 threaded end connections, so it makes up with male-threaded pipe nipples and pipe dope or tape. That also means it can be broken out later with unions rather than torch work.
4) What pipe sizes does the Nibco T-275-Y globe valve come in?
Two sizes: 1/2 inch (MPN NL3X006) and 1 inch (MPN NL3X00A). Both are female NPT threaded, so match the size to the nominal pipe size of the run you are cutting into.
5) Should I use a globe valve like the T-275-Y or a ball valve for throttling flow?
Globe valve, if you are throttling. The T-275-Y is a multi-turn globe valve with a renewable standard disc seating against an integral seat, which gives you controlled part-open flow without wire-drawing the seat the way a ball valve does. A ball valve is the better choice when the service is strictly full-open or full-closed and you want low pressure drop.
6) Is the disc on the Nibco T-275-Y replaceable, or do I replace the whole valve when it leaks by?
Replaceable. The T-275-Y uses a renewable standard disc with a PTFE seat seal material, seating on an integral seat machined into the body. The union bonnet unscrews so the stem and disc assembly can be pulled and the disc swapped in place, which is the main reason to spec a union bonnet over a screw-in bonnet on a valve you expect to service.
7) Does the Nibco T-275-Y meet MSS SP-80, and what is the body made of?
The T-275-Y conforms to MSS SP-80, the standard for bronze gate, globe, angle and check valves. Body material is bronze and it is dezincification resistant, which matters on closed loops and treated water where alloy selection drives service life.
8) Will the PTFE disc in the T-275-Y hold up in a hot water heating loop?
Yes. PTFE is the seat seal material and the valve carries a 300 psi saturated steam rating to 421 F, which is well above any hydronic heating loop temperature. System use is listed for commercial plumbing, heating, HVAC and industrial service.
