Nibco NL2K00A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use the Nibco T-211-Y bronze globe valve on potable drinking water?
No. Use in U.S. drinking water applications is prohibited after January 3, 2014, so the T-211-Y is not a potable water valve. It is meant for commercial and industrial service: hot and cold water systems that are not drinking water, HVAC, steam, compressed air, gas and other general utility lines. If your line is potable, you need a lead-free rated valve instead.
2) What are the pressure and temperature ratings on the Nibco T-211-Y globe valve?
Two ratings apply. Non-shock cold working pressure is 200 psi (13.8 bar). On saturated steam it is rated 125 psi (8.6 bar) up to 366 degrees F (178 degrees C). That steam rating is why it gets specified on low pressure steam and condensate as well as chilled and hot water loops.
3) How does the Nibco T-211-Y connect to my pipe, and do I need to solder it?
No soldering. The T-211-Y has Class 125 female NPT threaded ends (FIPT), so it screws onto male threaded pipe nipples or threaded adapters. That makes it the choice where you cannot bring a torch to the work, or where you want to be able to break the valve out of the line later. If your line is copper tube and you want a sweat joint, you need the solder-end version of the bronze globe valve instead.
4) Should I use a globe valve or a ball valve for throttling flow?
Use the globe valve. A globe valve like the T-211-Y moves a disc onto an integral seat through a multi-turn stem, so you can hold it part open and set a flow rate without chewing up the seat. A ball valve is a quarter-turn on/off device; throttling one wire-draws the seats and it fails early. Pick the ball valve for isolation you open and close fast, pick the T-211-Y where you are balancing or regulating a branch. The trade-off is pressure drop, since a globe valve turns the flow path and a full port ball valve does not.
5) Is the seat on the Nibco T-211-Y replaceable if it starts passing?
Yes. The T-211-Y uses a renewable PTFE seat disc, so when the valve starts weeping by, you back out the screw-in bonnet and replace the disc rather than cutting the valve out of the line. That serviceability is the reason globe valves stay in service for decades in a plant. PTFE also handles the 366 degree F steam rating better than a rubber composition disc would.
6) What pipe sizes does the Nibco T-211-Y bronze globe valve come in?
Ten sizes, from 1/4 inch up through 3 inch: 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2 and 3 inch. Common mechanical room sizes carry their own part numbers, for example NL2K006 for 1/2 inch, NL2K00A for 1 inch and NL2K00D for 2 inch. Sizing the valve to the line size keeps the throttling characteristic predictable.
7) Does the Nibco T-211-Y have to be installed with flow in a particular direction?
No. The T-211-Y is recommended for bi-directional service, so it does not carry a required flow arrow the way many globe valves do. What still matters at install is orientation of the bonnet and stem for access: leave room above the valve to pull the screw-in bonnet and change the PTFE disc without dismantling pipe.
8) Will the bronze body on this Nibco globe valve hold up in a hard water or high chloride system?
The T-211-Y body is bronze and is dezincification resistant, which is the failure mode that cracks and plugs ordinary brass valves in aggressive water. It also conforms to MSS SP-80, the standard that governs bronze gate, globe and check valves, so a spec calling for an MSS SP-80 Class 125 bronze globe valve is satisfied. For an unusual chemical service, check the fluid against Nibco's chemical resistance data before committing.
9) I'm standardizing shutoffs across a building's mechanical rooms. Does one Nibco T-211-Y cover hot water, chilled water and steam?
It does, within the ratings. One valve family covers commercial plumbing, heating and HVAC service, plus compressed air and gas utility lines, so a property or facilities team can stock a single threaded bronze globe valve across those systems. The limits to check are 200 psi cold working pressure and 125 psi saturated steam at 366 degrees F, and the fact that it cannot be used on potable drinking water. Stocking spare PTFE discs alongside makes the standardization worth more, since the seat is renewable.
