Nibco NF7Q00A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Nibco PF-480-Y press check valve be used on potable drinking water lines?
No. The PF-480-Y Ring Check valve is prohibited from use in U.S. drinking water applications after January 3, 2014. It is intended for domestic hot and cold water service outside of drinking water, HVAC (condensers, chilled water, hot water heating), commercial and residential plumbing, heating, industrial, irrigation and automatic sprinkler systems. For a potable line you need a lead-free rated check valve instead.
2) Do I need to solder the PF-480-Y check valve, or does it press on?
It presses. Both ends are female press connections, so the valve goes on with a press tool and jaw sized to the copper tube, no torch and no flame permit. When the crimp is made correctly a witness mark shaped like an N is visible on the joint. You supply the pressing tool and jaws separately.
3) What are the pressure and temperature limits on the Nibco PF-480-Y?
200 psi (13.8 bar) non-shock cold working pressure, with a maximum service temperature of 250 degrees F. That covers typical hydronic heating and chilled water loops as well as standard building water pressures.
4) What pipe sizes does the Nibco PF-480-Y Ring Check valve come in?
Six copper tube sizes: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. The part numbers run NF7Q006 (1/2 inch), NF7Q008 (3/4), NF7Q00A (1), NF7Q00B (1-1/4), NF7Q00C (1-1/2) and NF7Q00D (2 inch).
5) Can a Ring Check in-line lift check valve be installed vertically, or does it have to be horizontal?
The PF-480-Y is a spring-actuated in-line lift check, so the spring closes the disc rather than relying on gravity. That lets it work in vertical risers as well as horizontal runs, as long as flow follows the arrow direction on the body. A swing check, by contrast, is generally limited to horizontal lines or upward vertical flow.
6) What are the seat and body materials on the PF-480-Y, and will it hold up in a closed hydronic loop?
Bronze body, stainless steel stem, and a resilient PTFE disc against the seat. The bronze is dezincification resistant, which is what matters in closed loops and irrigation water where dezincification of brass is the usual failure. PTFE gives a tight shutoff at low differential pressure and takes the 250 degree F service temperature.
7) Does the Nibco PF-480-Y meet MSS SP-80 for a spec job?
Yes, the Ring Check PF-480-Y conforms to MSS SP-80, the standard for bronze gate, globe, angle and check valves. That is the line to cite on a submittal along with the 200 psi non-shock cold working pressure rating.
8) Should I use an in-line spring check or a swing check on a pump discharge?
An in-line lift check like the PF-480-Y closes with a spring the moment flow stops, which limits the slam you get on pump shutdown and lets it sit in any orientation. The tradeoff is more pressure drop than a swing check, since the disc sits in the flow path. On gravity drain or low-head lines where pressure loss is the concern, a swing check is the better pick; on pump discharge, circulator lines and vertical risers, the spring check is what you want.
9) Can I take this Ring Check valve apart to service the disc?
The PF-480-Y is a two-piece valve with a stainless steel stem and PTFE disc, so the internals are contained in that two-piece body rather than being a field-rebuildable cartridge assembly. Since the ends are pressed to the tube, replacement in place means cutting the valve out, so size and locate it with isolation valves either side if the line will need service.
