1) Can the Nibco PF-111 gate valve be used on potable water lines?
No. The PF-111 bronze press gate valve is prohibited for use in U.S. drinking water applications after January 3, 2014. Keep it on non-potable service: hydronic heating, HVAC, industrial, irrigation, and automatic sprinkler systems. If the line feeds drinking water, you need a lead-free rated valve instead.
2) What size copper tube does the Nibco PF-111 press gate valve connect to?
The PF-111 is offered in six sizes, 1/2 inch through 2 inch: 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2 and 2 inch. Both ends are female press, so the valve slips over the copper tube and is crimped with a press tool, no soldering or threading.
3) Does the PF-111 need clearance above it for the stem?
Yes, it's a rising stem design, so the stem travels up out of the bonnet as you open the valve. Allow vertical clearance above the handwheel when you lay out the rough-in, especially in a tight ceiling space or a pipe chase. The upside is you can tell at a glance whether the valve is open or closed.
4) How do I know a Nibco PF-111 press connection is properly crimped?
When the joint is pressed correctly, a distinct "N" witness mark shows on the fitting. That visual check is how an inspector or foreman verifies the crimp on a NIBCO Press System joint without disassembly.
5) What is the pressure and temperature limit on the Nibco PF-111 bronze gate valve?
200 psi (13.8 bar) non-shock cold working pressure, with a maximum service temperature of 250 degrees F. That covers typical hydronic heating and chilled water loops as well as commercial plumbing risers on non-potable service.
6) Should I use a gate valve like the PF-111 or a ball valve for shutoff?
A gate valve is a full-open/full-closed isolation valve. The PF-111 uses a solid wedge with integral seats and is bi-directional, so flow can come from either side, and it gives you a straight-through port with low restriction when fully open. It takes multiple turns to operate, which is fine for a valve you rarely touch. If you want quarter-turn operation or you need to throttle flow, choose a ball valve instead. Gate valves should not be left partially open.
7) Will the bronze body on this Nibco press gate valve hold up in a system with aggressive water?
The PF-111 body is bronze and the valve is dezincification resistant, which matters where water chemistry attacks the zinc in brass alloys and leaves porous, failed material behind. That's a common concern on irrigation and closed-loop systems with treated or high-chloride water.
