Nibco NL0500A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use a Nibco T-111 bronze gate valve on domestic drinking water?
No. The T-111 bronze gate valve is prohibited from use in U.S. drinking water applications after January 3, 2014. It's built for commercial plumbing, heating and HVAC service, plus hot and cold water, steam, compressed air, gas and general utility lines outside potable use. For potable water you need a valve that meets the lead-free requirement instead.
2) What pipe sizes does the Nibco T-111 gate valve come in?
Ten sizes, 1/4 inch through 3 inch: 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2 and 3. All of them are threaded, so you're sizing to the NPT pipe you're tying into, not to a flange bolt pattern. If your line is larger than 3 inch, this bronze body series stops there.
3) Does the Nibco T-111 thread onto pipe or does it need soldering?
It threads on. Both ends are female NPT (FIPT), Class 125 threaded connections, so it screws directly onto male-threaded pipe or nipples with no torch work. That also means you can back it out for service without cutting pipe, which is why it gets specified on equipment isolation. If your run is copper tube, you'd want a solder-end bronze gate valve instead of the T-111.
4) Is the Nibco T-111 a rising stem or non-rising stem gate valve, and do I need clearance above it?
Rising stem. The stem travels up out of the bonnet as the valve opens, so you need vertical clearance above the handwheel for the full stem travel. The upside is a visual open/closed indication from across a mechanical room, which is why rising stem gets specified in plant work. In a tight ceiling pocket or a shallow wall cavity, a non-rising stem valve is the better fit.
5) Should I use a gate valve or a ball valve for isolating this line?
A gate valve like the T-111 is meant for on/off isolation service, fully open or fully closed, and its solid wedge gives a straight-through flow path with little pressure drop. It isn't a throttling valve, and partially open the wedge chatters and wears. A ball valve gets you quarter turn operation in far less space. Where the gate valve earns its place is steam and higher-temperature utility service, rated here at 125 psi saturated steam to 353 degrees F, and where a slow-closing valve prevents water hammer on a long run.
6) What is the Nibco T-111 gate valve made of, and will it hold up in hot water?
Bronze body, bronze wedge and bronze seating surfaces throughout. Nibco also states the material is dezincification resistant, which matters on hot recirculating water and on systems with aggressive water chemistry, where lesser brass alloys lose zinc and fail at the threads. The valve is rated to 353 degrees F on saturated steam, so hot water service is well inside its range.
7) Does the Nibco T-111 meet the MSS SP-80 gate valve spec on my drawing?
Yes, the T-111 conforms to MSS SP-80, which is the standard commonly called out for bronze gate, globe and check valves on mechanical drawings. Paired with the Class 125 threaded ends and the 200 psi CWP / 125 psi SWP ratings, that's usually the full set of numbers a submittal reviewer wants on a bronze isolation valve.
8) I need the same valve on every riser in the building. Which Nibco T-111 part number do I order for each size?
The T-111 runs one part number per size: NL05004 for 1/4 inch, NL05005 for 3/8, NL05006 for 1/2, NL05008 for 3/4, NL0500A for 1 inch, NL0500B for 1-1/4, NL0500C for 1-1/2, NL0500D for 2, NL0500E for 2-1/2 and NL0500F for 3 inch. Nothing else to specify, there's no handing, trim or finish option on a bronze gate valve, so standardizing a building is just picking the size line by line.
9) Can the Nibco T-111 gate valve be repacked or rebuilt in place?
The T-111 uses a screw-in bonnet, so the bonnet threads into the body and comes off for access to the stem and wedge. That's the standard serviceable arrangement on bronze gate valves in this class, as opposed to a union-ring bonnet that separates without disturbing body threads. Plan on isolating the line and backing the bonnet off with the valve out of pressure.
10) Can I use a bronze gate valve on compressed air or gas service?
The T-111 is rated for compressed air, gas and other general utility service alongside hot and cold water, HVAC and steam, at 200 psi non-shock cold working pressure. For a shop air header or a utility gas line inside that pressure, the threaded bronze gate valve is the usual choice. Check the specific gas against Nibco's chemical resistance data before committing on anything other than standard utility service.
