Nibco NL1C00A – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can I use a Nibco T-131 bronze gate valve on potable water?
No. The T-131 bronze gate valve is prohibited from use in U.S. drinking water applications after January 3, 2014. It's built for commercial and industrial duty: hot and cold water systems that aren't potable, HVAC, steam, compressed air, gas and general utility service. For a domestic water line you need a valve that meets the lead-free requirement instead.
2) What pressure and steam rating does the Nibco T-131 gate valve carry?
300 PSI / 20.7 bar non-shock cold working pressure, and 150 PSI / 10.3 bar saturated steam to 366 F / 185 C. That steam rating is what makes it usable on a low pressure steam heating main, not just chilled and hot water. It's a Class 150 valve and conforms to MSS SP-80.
3) How does the Nibco T-131 connect to the pipe, and do I need to solder it?
No soldering. The T-131 has threaded ends, female NPT (FIPT) on both sides, so it threads straight onto male-threaded pipe or a male adapter. That makes it the one to use on black iron, galvanized or brass threaded pipe, and it also means the valve can be backed out of a line later without cutting. If you're running copper tube and want to sweat the valve in, you want the solder-end bronze gate valve instead.
4) What pipe sizes does the Nibco T-131 gate valve come in?
Ten sizes, 1/4 inch through 3 inch: 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 1-1/4, 1-1/2, 2, 2-1/2 and 3 inch NPT. That covers everything from a small gauge or drain takeoff up to a 3 inch branch main. Common part numbers are NL1C006 for 1/2 inch, NL1C00A for 1 inch and NL1C00D for 2 inch.
5) What does rising stem mean on a gate valve and does it need clearance above it?
On the T-131 the stem lifts out of the bonnet as you open the valve, so yes, you need headroom above the handwheel equal to roughly the travel of the gate. The payoff is that you can see at a glance whether the valve is open or shut, which is why rising stem is the usual spec in a mechanical room. In a tight ceiling or a wall chase where nothing can project, a non-rising stem gate valve is the better pick.
6) Is the Nibco T-131 gate valve OK to throttle flow, or does it have to be fully open or closed?
Fully open or fully closed. The T-131 uses a solid wedge gate, and a gate held partway across the flow chatters and erodes the seat. Gate valves are isolation valves. If you need to regulate flow on that line, use a globe or ball valve for the throttling duty and keep the gate valve as the shutoff.
7) Will a bronze gate valve hold up in a building with aggressive water?
The T-131 body is bronze and is dezincification resistant, which is the failure mode that cracks lesser brass valves in soft or chloride-heavy water. Seat and wedge are bronze too, so there's no soft seat to degrade with heat, which is what lets the same valve sit on a steam line and a hot water line.
8) Which Nibco bronze gate valve do I order for a threaded steam or HVAC shutoff?
The T-131 is the threaded, rising stem, solid wedge, screw-in bonnet bronze gate valve in the Nibco line, rated 150 PSI saturated steam and 300 PSI CWP. The leading T in the model is Nibco's code for female NPT threaded ends. If the line is copper and you're sweating joints, you want the solder-end version of the same bronze gate valve rather than this one.
9) Can the Nibco T-131 be repacked or rebuilt in place, or is it a throwaway valve?
It has a screw-in bonnet, so the bonnet threads out of the body and the stem and packing can be serviced rather than replaced whole. For an MRO crew standardizing a building, that matters: a weeping stem is a repack, not a pipe cut. The valve has to be isolated and depressurized before the bonnet comes off.
